Guys, it doesn't matter if she wants to overclock or not right now.
I doubt she would want to go through the steps of overclocking, as it might be boring to her. Not saying she wouldn't its just that some people want to get straight to the point and fire up some Crysis.

Back on topic though, a H61 chipset will do her just fine (...). If you are going with the H61 though, consider getting the ASRock H61ICAFE which has 4 memory slots, or get her 8 instead of 4GB.

Also like what KBcobra stated, an Intel i3-2100 will do her fine as well. It has the ability to hyperthread which is pretty awesome.

For the memory you can save a bit by not necessarily going CL7, but maybe going to 1600MHz. I think that Sandy Bridge benefits from higher clock speeds.

As for PSU, either will do fine.

For the HDD, consider giving her more space and maybe a 1TB Samsun Spinpoint F3 just so incase she runs out of room she doesn't have to go through the hassle of adding another one. If your heart is set on the 500gb, I would opt for a Caviar Blue instead of a Black. I don't think that the performance between the two are significant but for the price of the Blue it may be worth it.

For the case, try to avoid bulky or like I guess manly looking ones like the HAF. Consider letting her pick one but giving her a budget I guess. Well not a budget since its her money, but something less than $80 I suppose. a CM690 II Advance looks pretty classy, or an Antec 300 if you're going real budget.

Finally, the video card. Since she is gaming on a laptop, I think you're going to have to get her a decent monitor. If you are lucky and there is a monitor on sale, the best deal I've seen is an Asus 1920x1080 LED backlit 21.5'' monitor for $129.99. Get her atleast get her a 1680x1050 monitor. The graphics can be a 460 1GB (or 786mb) or if she wants more power and performance the 6850 is awesome for that. The PSU is fine for these cards too.

Coming to the conclusion of my post I'm just going to point out a few more things. Don't forget the Operating System. Windows 7 for System Builders is $100 so expect to drop that much extra and don't make her run Linux. Also, remember about other peripherals such as a mouse, keyboard, and a speaker.
Hope my post helped you decide on your parts a little bit more.

this. Buying an i5 that isnt a k series makes absolutely no sense. It only cost $35 more, and anyone can overclock it. Sandy Bridge overclocking is so easy a caveman could do it.

Even if shes not overclocking, I would still get her the k series. Its worth the extra $35 and then some.

"an Antec 300 if you're going real budget."
I posted a link to my similar thread and we also used the 300.
<--- 300 are allways good
More than enough room and some fans which aren`t loud if you run them on low settings.
