Best performance for the money?

Thread Starter
I would like to stick with ATI, unless there would be such a difference to the point I would get a nose bleed.

2x6870s
(ie http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102909)
2x6970s
(ie http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102915)
1x6990
(ie http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-574-_-Product)

Other options? I dont really want to break the price of 2 6970s, but if its not a huge difference between the 6870 and the 6970.. Ill just stick with getting the 6870 XD. Im not exactly brilliant when it comes to understanding gfx cards (Hence the post -.-) I would really appreciate the advice =)

Also, would there be a certain 6970 that would perform better than the Sapphire ones or would I be better off just trying to overclock them myself if need be...

I'd say two 6950s, there really is no need 6970 becuase you can unlock them.

This.

Also, the 6990 certainly isn't bang for the buck.

Unlock means you unlocked the shaders (basically making them into 6970s) on them but it can only be done on cards that have bios switches. You can also overclock them. No there is not really much difference the extra memory is good for apps like CAD and really large draw distances, you won't see much difference with games like Call of Duty, but games like Grand theft auto you may see a small difference. So not really.

Still confused on the unlocking thing.. There is a 1gb XFX version I could get at a local shop for a similar price as the newegg 2gb one tharr ^^ .. If I am going to have 2 of them in CF.. should I still order the 2gb one or go grab the local on and save on shipping? =3

The 2GB 6950 is just a 6970 that failed to be fully stable, so they downclocked it to an 6950 instead.
It's not 100% sure it will unlock to an 6970 but with these 6950's they unlock with almost any attempt. Like 95% chance.

Anti Aliasing etc. uses a lot of VRAM and you have a big monitor, so the 2GB will be the better option. However, there is no major difference. But 1GB may not always be enough.
My GTX 460's struggle when I turn Metro 2033 at max settings, due to their 1GB of VRAM.

You cannot unlock the 1GB version.

Wonderfully helpful, Thank you thank you thank you =)

Im still locked between the 6970 and 50 though now since there is a 5% chance of failure and well, I am totally clueless on how to unlock them.. Willing to learn, but clueless.

I will order two of one or the other by tonight (2gb versions). It would be awesome if you guys could recommend a brand or even a specific card. =D

No thats actually not a very good deal, that newegg one is much better, but you can't unlock them. Unlocking can be complicated to explain. I'm not sure if it will work well with crossfire. I'd say get the two 6950 (those twin frozr II ones, so quiet I own it) and crossfire them, maybe overclock them, and keep them that way, and don't bother with unlocking (since these ones can't, or are dangerous to since there is no bios switch, will get bricked if you mess up)
