Unleashing the AD700s

Thanks to you guys, I've decided that my next pair of gaming headphones will be the AD700s. But what's this about some people saying that if you just plug them in to the computer (I don't have a sound card) that they will be crippled? What kind of hardware do I need to get the "real" AD700 experience... within budget... which is less than $35...

you wont be getting the best audio quality using onboard audio but i think you'll still notice the difference between anything cheaper and the AD700's, honestly though they are only entry level headphones they'll sound fine for most things even on onboard audio, just never plug them in through the case's front panel out.

Thanks for the opinion... still I can't help but get freaked out reading things like

In short: The AD700s with on board sound is atrocious. I am willing to state that the AD700s with on board sound are barely better than any skull candies you can pick up for 20 bucks. The AD700s are extremely crippled without a sound card in my opinion. What do I mean crippled?
Could anybody else weigh in on this??

AD700s will be good enough without the amp...down the road you can get a sound card w/headphone amp or just a dedicated amp but that's an expensive hobby non the less

Its like getting a gaming mouse without a mousepad. Bad analogy, but the A700s will need a soundcard. You won't be getting anything out of it without one. Search for used ones on OCN, or get a good inexpensive on. Xonar D1/DX or X-Fi Xtreme Gamer or Music.

That's not even part of his question. He doesn't need an amp for AD700s nor did he even consider one.

He's considering whether he needs a sound card and how much does he have to spend on a sound card to notice a difference.

For gaming you most definitely need a sound card for the AD700s. A sound card was such a benefit for positional cues that comparing the two...night and day.

Music wise, I found the sound card gave the AD700s a "hotter" signal and clarity was also increased. Everything felt more alive and music in general sounded better.

I reckon almost any sound card over 30 dollars would benefit you from the Xtreme Music to the Xonar DG or higher.

Agreed.

Don't be afraid to pick something up used too.
You'll be able to stretch more out of $35-40 here than you would buying new/retail.

Just what I was looking for. Many thanks and +rep

You'll be fine with the Xonar DG, the headphone amp in it will also help with the bass (the advantage the DG has over D1 or DX with bass light headphones)
personally for headphones i don't see any point in getting anything between the DG or the STX, i'd go DG>STX>external DACs and amplifiers
with speakers i'd say minimum is D2 or the HT omega soundcards (i'm not well versed in where they come in though)

the AD700s definitely need to be amplified to get decent bass out of them though

They are 32 ohm, no amp is needed. A soundcard will help, and imo an asus xonar dg would be plenty. That being said, onboard is not as terrible as it once was. They will sound pretty good regardless. Don't go spending 200 on a soundcard expecting magic results.

More importantly is audio source. Flacs are awesome, 320 mp3s are ok, 128 mp3 should be avoided like the plague.
