Onboard is only really a problem with IRQ issues when you have all kinds of noise coming in from hardware conflicts. This is fairly typical on laptops. Otherwise you might have a problem discerning from a double blind test.

I don't know about you, but to me and many others here it is incredibly easy to recognize the improvement of even a cheap sound card.
