Whoops, should have listened to you earlier, oh well its not the end of the world. For next time, make sure he does a little research and check out some benchmarks before he makes any decisions like that.

EDIT: More Info

Quote:
CPU Replacement Only Return Policy

Return for refund within: non-refundable
Return for replacement within: 30 days

Products that state "This item is covered by Newegg.com's CPU Replacement Only Return Policy", or items labeled as “Non-refundable” (or similar labeling) must be returned to Newegg within 30 days of the invoice date for this policy to apply. Products covered by this return policy may only be returned for a replacement of the same or equivalent item. “Return” constitutes receipt of the product by Newegg, and not the mere issuance of an RMA.

The following conditions are not acceptable for return, and will result in the merchandise being returned to you:

Any CPU that is physically damaged
Improper installation of CPU fans and/or improper clocking may cause CPUs to chip. CPUs that are chipped, burnt or have bent/broken pins are considered physically damaged and cannot be returned for refund or replacement. Physical damage includes (but is not limited to) improper handling and any other type of damage sustained by irregular use.

It's more than the clockspeed we learned that in the Netburst era when AMD first shut Intel down. Sandy Bridge is just a vastly superior architecture to AMDs K8 cores (used in Thuban dies).

The silly graphs and benchmarks aside,I doubt your friend notices any difference. Heck, either system sure beats playing on a console.

If he can't return it, he has two options.

Stick with the Phenom II he already has. Sandy Bridge is better, but it's arguably not worth retuning everything else and buying Sandy Bridge stuff if he can't return the CPU, because then that'll make going the Sandy Bridge route that much more more expensive. The Sandy Bridge will be better, but the Phenom II isn't incapable or anything.

The other option is, if he can SELL the Phenom II for ~3/4 what it cost him to get (or maybe even more), then it's probably worth it.

I agree, calling it mediocre or horrible is a huge exaggeration, since it's neither, but the matter is, the only thing being biased would be by not taking the better option/platform for the intended use (gaming in this case) if/when they both cost the same. That's the point most people were making.

I understand the point, however his friend didn't research enough to find out SB is better with gaming,or was on a tighter budget so went with AMD,didn't trust the SB issue even though it's fixed with B3 stepping,or is loyal to the brand. I would have went with a 2500K because IB fits into the same socket. However,at the time SB boards weren't even available due to the chipset issue, and every other Intel option would have ended up being more expensive.

You're one to talk, your sentence is lacking punctuation.
Are you a diehard Intel fan? Your friend got a AMD,so what? If he 's happy with it,that's all that matters. Everyone has his or her own personal preference.

Who cares? If he wants your opinion he'll ask, if he values your opinion he'll follow your advice.

Otherwise just leave it be, why get yourself stressed because of his bad choice?

Just to be clear as well, its not like he has a bad system or cpu. He just didn't get the best performing one.
