All SSDs have some reserve area. Allowing the user to set it up shouldn't be any more novel than being able to adjust the firmware capacity of any HDD, which is often easily done with freely available manufacturer tools.

Short stroking HDD to get low access times.
Short stroking SSD to prevent all data for being used and worn down.

No, looks like SSD still isn't mature enough to be used as a storage medium for me yet.

The nomeclature dates back decades before hard drives where ever thought to be for the common consumers.

SSDs are excellent for heavy server use where data changes rapidly. HDD technology still can have trouble saturating a 10GbE network.

Why would a driver end up with that much bloat? All it would need to do is periodically poll avaliable space and monitor usage... which the drive/OS is already doing.
