That x3 should unlock to an x4 if your lucky, and maybe even the L3 cache.

I think you should go back to the $700 price-tag. I don't think overclocking is going to happen on a $55 board with a processor that costs twice as much. It looks like you updated the original post to an X3. Planning to unlock it, then?

Not sure if you have to be at uni or not in US.
What he said. Universities typically have Windows 7 for pirate-level prices. If If you're a CSC/CSE student, you can get it for free through MSDNAA. At my university, we have MSDNAA for CSC/CSE students and $20 Windows 7 Ultimate installs.

Bio/Theory: I've not given it much thought, honestly. If it's not too difficult then I'm all for more performance. I just don't wan to drop $80-100 on a CPU and mess it up... :x

Brummie/Bio: Yes, I'm a student. Or at least, I will be. I take advantage of my .edu address whenever possible. (free year of amazon prime? Yes please.) Since I'm still wrapping up HS, I didn't know they offered student discounts on OS'es. Thanks for the tip!

you might wanna switch the 6770 to a 5770. as far as i know, the 6770 is a rebranded 5770 and it keeps the same clock speed, same performance. It will also save you a little bit of money.

Did the reasearch and confirmed what you said. It's a rebranded that supports more outputs. Something I'll never utilize. Thanks for the tip.

OS Question: On my broken laptop (my sig rig,) which I'm replacing, I have a sticker for a Windows 7 Home Premium Product Key. Is there any way to utilize that?

RAM Question: Is it possible to use my laptop's RAM in this build and save even more? It's in perfect condition, I was just unsure if they'd fit. I want to use what I can from my sig rig, but don't know what's compatible and what isn't. (Link.)

*edit: Also added a power supply to the OP.

*2nd edit: Will my selected mobo allow for unlocking the fourth core?

You may well be able to utilise the windows 7 product key, since it is really the product key that you are paying for when you purchase a copy of windows, not the software itself.

You would need to get hold of a copy of the software and try it. It's an OEM key so it's only really supposed to be used once, by an OEM manufacturer on a pre-build system, but in my experience, they usually activate fine more than once.

As for your laptop ram, i'm afraid your out of luck, desktop and laptop ram are completely different sizes.

ANYWAY! This is my first build ever, so I'm coming to the wise OCN body to help...

I'm trying to keep a tight budget with as much power as I can squeak out (as everyone.) This build is from TOTAL SCRATCH minus a mouse, so if I'm missing any pieces, please let me know. (Like cables... I'm unsure what I'll get and what I'll need to buy separate...)

I'm looking to do some mid-range to high-end gaming on this PC (I play Starcraft II, recently ran through Portal 2, and have gotten into League of Legends lately,) as well as the basic music and movies. I don't need to play everything on OMGMAXXXED settings, but smooth framerates with decent graphics would be nice. Any tips/suggestions would be appreciated, as I'm a relative noob when it comes to building.

AMD Athlon II X3 450 Rana 3.2GHz -$79.99

BIOSTAR A880G+ AM3 AMD 880G HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard -$54.99

Patriot 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 -$39.99

NZXT Apollo Black SECC Steel Chassis -$59.99

Western Digital Caviar 640GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -$26.99 (Recert.)

SAPPHIRE 100283-3L Radeon HD 5770 -$114.99

RAIDMAX HYBRID 2 RX-530SS 530W -$39.99

Acer V193WEJb Black 19" 5ms Widescreen LCD -$99.99

ASUS DVD Burner -$20.99

Logitech K270 Wireless Keyboard -$29.99 (I don't need a fancy gaming keyboard.)

Windows 7 - $0-30 (Definitely willing to go Vista or XP though.)

Total: ~$570-600

If there's anything I'm overkill on, and could shave off some $$$ for my needs, let me know. On the flip side, if I'm underestimating something, I'd appreciate knowing that too.

P.S. I've never really attempted, but I'm willing (and would like to,) try to OC what I can to safe levels, if it'll save money... and just for performance-reasons.
Your town is 20 minutes from Microcenter.

http://www.microcenter.com/specials/...ource=ACT_BYO&

You can get the Phenom™ II X4 965 Black Edition with mobo for $130 or the Phenom™ II X6 1055T with mobo for $160. Also, you can usually find good deals that they do not advertise on their website. They might even give you a discount if you buy your whole computer there.

I would consider a different power supply. That one is junk.

Cases:
Haf 912 Case: $60

or

Antec One Hundred (painted interior): ~$67
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811129098

I would strongly consider the 5850 over the 5770.. For an extra $25 its well worth it in the long run.

AMD 5850 1gb: $140

Even if it doesn't you should still be able to call Microsoft and have them unbind the key from the hardware. Getting a hold of the software itself is easy. Just torrent it. Since you're going to be using the key anyway, it's not piracy, so just be practical.
