the 970/980 can run DDR3 1600 RAM while the 940 can't. thats the main difference

You can't use sandy bridge or any other processor without the motherboard, RAM, (a graphics card), a Power Supply, Optical Drive and a Hard Drive.

The Ram is different despite being DDR3. They use different voltages, and are optimised differently for the Intel and the AMD Platforms.

The Motherboard pricing is very different and AMD boards cost less than intel's. Historically, motherboard for the AMD platform have been lower than those for the intel platform.
Sorry, I gotta call BS on this. You can almost ALWAYS buy a cheap mobo for any socket, the tradeoff is you will get garbage VRMs/expansion slots on it, or a garbage chipset. The million dollar question is though: do you overclock? If you do, you will need to spend at least £80 for a motherboard, be it for a SB or Phenom II. Back when first gen Core i5s/7s were out you could tell me this all day (that AMD is cheaper/better for buck, blah blah) and I would agree with you, now that SB is out Intel is the king of the "bang-for-buck" crown. No excuses.

I will say I'm not a fan of these small 100MHz bumps, but AMD isn't forcing you to buy their highest clocked chip. The 955BE is still the best buy in the Phenom II X4 series. The highest clocked chip in a series is often not the best deal and this is no different.

I think you mean the 965BE: link. It's the only Phenom II chip that was 140W, later a 125W version was released to replace it. The 970BE is a 125W chip: link.

Those are interesting numbers you fabricated there but they are false. According to CPU World the Phenom 955BE cost $245 upon release, and today it costs $129.99 on sale at Newegg. That's about a 47% price drop. Then if you count the 940BE AM2+ chip which released at $275, the drop in price to what the 955BE costs now is 59%. I mean no offense at all with this reply but I don't appreciate people just making up numbers in order to make their argument sound valid.
People are getting "mad" about this because their pricing doesn't reflect their performance, and AMD was/is all about bang-for-the-buck. Now they're flat out refusing to compete, even on the price, while ignoring the fact that their CPUs are slower.

I don't know and don't care what US pricing was. I know for a fact that a Phenom II 955 was about £125 at launch and a 965 was £155. Now a 955 is like £105 and a 965 is £120. Take a look at some British websites if you don't believe me, it's not my fault AMD don't want to compete in price over here anymore. Nobody is telling them to stop re-releasing higher-clocked CPUs, but they can at least TRY and compete in price. Most shops here don't/won't stock anything above a 965 BE for AMDs quad Phenoms because it's pointless.

You guys are all SERIOUSLY underestimating the cost of hardware....

Biostar 890FX board - $109.99 Open Box (regular $149.99)
Biostar P67 Board - $119.99 Open Box (regular $129.99)

The entire reason I even HAVE a Sandy Bridge rig, is because it was CHEAPER than buying an x6 build, which is cheaper than what this 980BE is now.

I also don't see the point in this release. But it DOES serve its purpose. And that's holding the fastest AMD quad chip at stock. If somebody doesn't overclock, then this would be a fine chip to buy.

Good point! P67 boards are pretty cheap! The Biostar P67 is a VERY solid board that can get you 5Ghz easily with a 2500k.

IMO, the 980 is worth $150 tops

What's up with the Phenom hate. It's not so bad. For gaming it's still fine. I say it's a perfect drop in upgrade for AM2+/AM3 dual core users.
