PHP: Variable name as argument in function - Page 2

post #11 of 35
Yep, Variable variables. You are just passing the variable name part into your function.

If you are calling it as you put above, the issue may be that you don't have quotes around your string literals.
fetch_stat(field_12, 'orange');

Guessing that is just a forum typing issue though.

Okay, doublepost, seeing as you posted while I was typing up my last reply:

It seems we both had some misconceptions; what you just posted in context to my example does indeed seem like what I had in mind. I honestly hadn't tried putting it like that because I was too busy pulling my hair out from the logical errors in my head when trying to think of a proper way..

I had indeed read up on variable variables before I even posted in here to begin with, but until you came with a contexted example I had been too blind to see it.

Thanks, error10.

Ah, so you DID need both solutions.

Code:

$$bar = mysql_query("SELECT $foo FROM dt_fields WHERE member_id='" . $userno . "'")

Wouldn't that be
Code:

$$bar = mysql_query("SELECT " . $foo . "FROM dt_fields WHERE member_id='" . $userno . "'")

?

Either one will work, though mine might be a few hairs more efficient.

I don't do that much PHP at all, only for some tiny scripts here and there; in college we only got taught not to put variables within quotes as it would go buggy so I never bothered to actually try it, but cool!

I'm not aware of any issues with variable substitution in quoted strings.

Way to go, error10! I was wondering why OP was acting like a spoiled brat and more importantly, disrespecting an entire sub-boards community by claiming we couldn't understand his easily comprehensible question (which it wasn't). I was left sitting here baffled as to what exactly it was OP was asking for three minutes before I could wrap my head around it.l

Variable substitutions in double quoted strings have never caused me issues and I have done it A LOT. Can be a little more obvious if you use concat, but I always wrap my in-string vars in curly braces - {$var} - so it is more obvious and because Arrays and objects will not eval correctly unless wrapped in curly braces. I find if I just always do it, I never have to worry about forgetting and getting weird errors.

Okay, not entirely related, but I have come across something weird:

I had a working script for a function, then I started to separate the database connection bit from the part of the script with the functions. The functions are common and thus placed in a file called dat_commoncode.php which is put into the main page file via a php include function. Same goes for the now separated database connection parts, which are included at the very beginning under the name dat_dbconn.php.

When these parts are included into the script, executing a database query inside a function in dat_commoncode.php seems to go wrong, as I'm getting the following error:
Code:
Warning: mysql_result() [function.mysql-result]: Unable to jump to row 0 on MySQL result index 4 in /home/deb13109n2/domains/pclv2beta.net/public_html/dat_commoncode.php on line 5
At first I had the database connection bits inside that same file, but even then it already threw this error, which is weird considering everything inside one file should be able to execute properly, right?

The query being executed is a simple select:
Code:

$fetch = mysql_query("SELECT " . $field . " FROM data_pfields_content WHERE member_id='" . $userno . "'")

        or die(mysql_error());
And is copy/pasted directly from a file in which the code works without any problems.

When I copy the contents of the function out of dat_commoncode.php and into the main php file that's being excecuted, it suddenly works without throwing any errors. That means that I'm probably overlooking something that causes the included script to not see something. What would that be?
