Asus EAH4870/HTDI/1GD5 Black screen of death

Hi everyone,

i am currently running a Asus EAH4870/HTDI/1GD5 videocard. It is a fine card if u use it for desktop use but then when i try to play a game at stock settings 750 mhz 900 mem it just locks up during a game of fifa it goes in some sort of hybernation mode but doesn't come out of it. I have to reboot the pc to get it to work again. It runs at the moment at 70 c while playing fifa i know it is hot but it is on stock cooler on a crappy case with no airflow. I have 2 monitors hooked up to the card and they both go black at the same time. The strange thing is if i underclock it to 500 mhz 900 mem it runs perfectly fine never a crash in any game that i play. If i use 3dmarkvantage at 750 mhz 900 mem and i run all the test incl graph it doesn't crash so what could this be. I just clocked it back to 500 mhz like i have been doing in the last few months but this isn't they way to go. I have tried every damn version of ccc and non helped so now i am running the latest 11.4 catalyst.
can somebody help me.

thanks in advanced

greetings,

cutiecutest.

EDIT: I posted before I saw you succesfully ran 3DMark at 750/900.

If 3DM's graphic tests don't crash, then the card is hardwarely fine. Something else crashes, maybe PSU.

3DM does NOT load GPU and CPU at the same time - real games do.
If your PSU is going bad, then it may stop providing the juice required by the GPU, once both the GPU and CPU kick in.
Check that.

This doesn't mean much.
Is the unit new?

Is it single rail? How many amps on the 12v (for every rail, if multirail)?

Okay bare with me on this cause i don't know a lot about volts ampers etc. I am guessing that u are asking for what is shown in the picture.

•Single 12V Power Rail
This singular stout 12V power rail maximizes power control to connected elements with 80A flowing through it, reducing the need for load balancing on multiple rails.

if u need anymore info please don't hessitate to ask.

thanks in advanced for taking the time to help me.

No problem.

Hmm.. The combined power of CPU and GPU is ~300W, so unless the PSU is damaged, the problem is not there..

You said that @500Mhz the card works fine.
Try raising from there, steps of 50Mhz and see where the trouble begins.
It won't tell us much, but would help you find a freq that is both fast and operational.

Re-check all cables - loose 6-pin power plug can cause random shut downs of the card.

The temps seem fine, RV770 is designed to operate at ~80C.

Have you tested it with games other than FIFA?
Maybe the game is bugged and crashes the PC.
Try something intensive (Crysis, if you have it).

See what results you'll get from those things... Something should reveal the cause. But if everything confirms with the original post - then I'm just as puzzled as you, mate.

it runs Rock solid on 500 mhz never over the last 3 months that i played fifa on 500 mhz has it crashed 1's. yesterday i increased it back to 750 mhz cause i really don't like something working at less then what i payed for. I played 1 game fifa 11 and it crashed. Had temps and everything running at my second screen al was normal 67-70 degrees gpu. Well as u can understand i don't have crysis here cause i thought why buy that game if my card can't even run fifa properly on stock setting. But there are ways around that problem i'll see if i can get crysis running by tonight typer.gif

BTW the error or something doesn't show in windows log. the only thing that windows log shows is that i did a hard reboot.
