[[H]ard|OCP] NVIDIA 3-Way SLI and AMD Tri-Fire Redux

Thread Starter
The re-review on the Nvidia 3-way SLI and AMD Tri-Fire is now up with a new Sandy Bridge processor to ensure there is no CPU bottleneck.

This is in response the the original thread I posted a few days ago here.

The tables seemed to have turned somewhat in Nvidia's favor. While it might still be hard to justify the price difference between the setups for some, my hats off to Nvidia for at least justifying it in some sense.

I'll post my thoughts in this thread as well as I am sure a new "discussion" will insue

Anyway, good re-test. Nvidia pulls head as expected for the $400-$500 premium. AMD is better in some games in terms of $/perf and it others the 30% increase in cost almost gives you a similar increase in performance.

About the loss in performance with the AMD set up in some games... I think it points to the crossfire bridge bandwidth issues at eyefinity type resolutions. In the first set up, there was a total of 36 lanes of pci-e bandwidth (16,16,4), but it the second set up there were only 32 lanes (16,16 or 8,8,8,8). If I remember correctly, CFX uses empty pci-e lanes to make up for the shortcomings of the bridge. In the first case the 4x is empty, however for the re-test all the lanes are being used by GPUs. I wonder if that explains the huge drop in F1.

[B]Our new test system uses an ASUS P8P67 WS Revolution motherboard based on the P67 chipset. Here is what ASUS has to say.

Designed for true power users, the P8P67 WS Revolution uses a built-in NF200 controller that enhances bandwidth availability between the board and the four graphics card expansion slots. This is ideal for NVIDIA GeForce SLI™ and AMD CrossFireX™, as the new motherboard can easily handle 2-Way SLI in dual PCI Express X16, while 3-Way SLI works in dual PCI Express X8 and one X16 link. This translates into a 26.4% performance increase compared to regular P67 motherboards with similar SLI configurations, as measured by 3DMark06. For CrossFireX, the P8P67 WS Revolution supports up to quad GPUs builds in PCI Express X8 links, unlike standard motherboards, which lack the bandwidth to do so.

an obvious result... Last time they were getting only a few per cent better results with tri-SLI than 2 way SLI. If that's not a sign of a bottleneck then I'm not sure what is...

I would still like to see more games though.

Of all the silly... you know what I won't even finish that statement.

Where else are they supposed to get the pci-e lanes? Does AMD have anything like the NF200 chip? Maybe you should blame Intel next for only having one 16x pci-e lane for the SB platform

NF200 is an Nvidia chip, optimized for Nvidia GPUs.

There is some strange results in that review that Brent can't explain for the AMD cards.

1+1=2. Everything is pointing to the Nvidia NF200 chip.

Why would Nvidia ''Optimize'' the chip for AMD cards? Really? We are talking about Nvidia here. Same guys that used woodsrews to show a ''done and ready'' card to stop people from buying AMD card.

Allow me to quote the very same piece you did...

You are really grasping now. Your cards scale well, but you are also getting more and more butthurt with each post. The NF200 chip simply adds bandwidth to allow for more cards to run optimally.

Let me quote something for you from the editor:

''and we have seen some results that are fully confusing from Tri-Fire that need to be looked into further.''

Not me telling that. Them. Would not be surprised if the culprit is the Nvidia NF200 chip. They did worst thing in the past.

I'm sure Nvida engineers lost hours and hours and hours ''tweaking'' the NF200 chip to get the most from AMD cards, there only competitor.

The NF200 chip has been known to add latency during communication between the cpu and cards, but that was with nVidia cards as well. Why would it be against AMD just this one time?
