Yes please imply. And don't be sidetracked by what ASUS has to say:

"motherboard can easily handle 2-Way SLI in dual PCI Express X16, while 3-Way SLI works in dual PCI Express X8 and one X16 link"

What do they know, right?

After all, some forum guy named "JCP said the manual states it defaults to x8x8 with 2 cards installed."

I posted a snapshot of the page in the ASUS manual where it says slots work in x8/x8 in dual card mode. Now, might be a typo, or might just be written confusingly.

It had 4 slots. 2 of them work in 8x8. The other two work in 16x16x. Depends where you place the cards.

Please explain to me what my conclusions are, because I haven't stated them.
I own this same Tri-fire setup and know the drivers they used don't setup the cards properly, and I'm not sure they checked this. Plus the test HardOCP did with going to AUSUM mode requires a manual setting adjustment. The 6990 only goes from 830 to 880 when going from bios 2 to 1. The memory though, between the two card is mismatched. The 6970 is at 1375, while the 6990 is at 1250. They don't change automatically, you have to manually adjust the 6990 up to the 6970. So basically, your not seeing a set of cards running synchronized or at 6970 speeds if this is not done.

1250 to 1375 is what, 1-2 fps?

But... seriously ... i thought by now that everyone knew that Fermi, although not very efficient, it's an hell of a chip and Radeon can't catch it on the high line ( 580 ) ...

I went from a 580 to a 6970 CF ... i know what i'm talking about ...
Radeon's are terrific cards... i'm having a lot of fun with my cf ... but when i did this swap i knew what i was getting ... i wasn't expecting a single card to out-perform a 580 ...

And... when people say that CF is better than SLi ... although i can see that happening in some cases, what happened was that CF " caught" SLi in terms of performance... and sometimes it gets more effective results than SLi...

We can't just say CF is way better than SLi ... because SLi is a proven & stable architecture with great performance ... it was CF that had to run to catch SLi ...

I mean... Nvidia bought 3DFX ... i loved & still love 3DFX and they were the guys that implemented the SLi tech ... named SLi ... and sold all the R&D to Nvidia with 3DFX acquisition ...

So... if there were doubts from some users... ( maybe big fanboys ) ... SLi beating CF is nothing to be "wow'ed" about ... it's a very natural outcome when you get 3 580's working in SLi ... it's a freaking beast and no way Radeons 6970 will catch it ...

As i say... there are a few games that they might be there...

Another thing is when you overclock the cards.
Overclocking a Radeon will give you some boost ... but nothing amazing...

Overclocking a Fermi will give you A HELL of a kick ... i mean... my ex-580 had a 5k jump in Vantage ... and Battlefield got 20fps in some cases!

That's intense!

So... just try to understand the scores as they are ... 2 different cards, in technological & budget aspects...

The next thing is, we need the games to make these setups worthy!

There is a performance increase that was to be expected, but it's not a $1000 AUD worth of an increase.

Sorry Nvidia.

No, it's not.

And please, provide some proof that an AMD GPU will "perform better" on an 890 FX board than an Intel P67. I think you'll find evidence hard to come by.

You're just looking for excuses.

Except for the fact that any high end video card setup like the ones hardocp was running in this article would get bottlenecked to hell with a phenom II.
