[[H]ard|OCP] NVIDIA 3-Way SLI and AMD Tri-Fire Redux - Page 16

I'm gonna stick with 2xHD6970 CF for several reasons:
- It's a bit faster than HD6990, maybe quieter and cooler.
- My monitor only has a single DVI input so the HD6990 would be useless, with HD6970 CF I can use 2 DVI ports and use a mini DisplayPort to dual link DVI adapter for the 3rd monitor.
And according to this review I believe I can still games at 7680x1600 with a few new titles:
http://www.techspot.com/review/390-t...nce/page1.html
I'm not looking to max out at that resolution, my main point is just game on a singe 30" for now and try out Eyefinity for fun so HD6970 CF is just a temp solution till the next gen cards come out. So in my case I believe this would be my best bet compare to a GTX 580 1.5GB SLI and I'll save at least $500 over the GTX 580 3GB SLI setup.

My HIS 6990 came with a DVI active display port adapter as a FYI.

But I figure that's a single link DVI, which can only support up to 1200p, I need the dual link one for 1600p.

You have a DVI on the 6990 and can add another DVI with the display port adapter. Same as having two DVIs on one 6970. The 6970 has two DVIs, 2 display ports and a HDMI. The 6990 has 1 DVI and 4 display ports with adapters. The only active adapter was the DVI. The others were passive. Both cards have 5 ports each.

Why would I wanna add another DVI port with the DisplayPort adapter for the 2nd one while I already have 2 DVI ports available? Plus the active mini DisplayPort to dual link DVI is not cheap, with the HD6970 I only need one, why should I buy two for the HD6990?
And if the mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter is single link then it would be useless for me anyway.

Did you read what I posted?? It comes with the 6990. If you don't get it, stick to a 6970 then. They have 5 ports each, what's the difference??

Why don't they just test at 1080p to test the gpu power vs who has more ram

You're saying the HD6990 does come with a mini DisplayPort to DUAL LINK DVI adapter like this?
As I said I don't think it comes with the dual link DVI adapter, the one I see it is the single link DVI.
With a HD6970 I only need one adapter, with a HD6990 I would need two of them, can you confirm if your HD6990 has the mini DisplayPort to dual link DVI adapter like the one I posted above?
EDIT: I just looked at the mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter that comes with the HD6990 and that's a single link one, so in my case I can't use it. If I get the HD6990 I would need to buy 2 dual link DVI adapters vs 1 for the HD6970, you get it now?

Because who would buy a $1000 + setup like these to only run them only a single 1080 monitor? Would be a pointless test. Even on a 1600p it would be pointless.
