According to the manual for the P8P67 WS Revolution, page 2-9, the board defaults to x8/x8

From the review...

Here is what ASUS has to say.

Designed for true power users, the P8P67 WS Revolution uses a built-in NF200 controller that enhances bandwidth availability between the board and the four graphics card expansion slots. This is ideal for NVIDIA GeForce SLI™ and AMD CrossFireX™, as the new motherboard can easily handle 2-Way SLI in dual PCI Express X16, while 3-Way SLI works in dual PCI Express X8 and one X16 link. This translates into a 26.4% performance increase compared to regular P67 motherboards with similar SLI configurations, as measured by 3DMark06. For CrossFireX, the P8P67 WS Revolution supports up to quad GPUs builds in PCI Express X8 links, unlike standard motherboards, which lack the bandwidth to do so.
I guess ASUS doesn't read their own manuals

I can only go by what the manufacture inputs in the manual. If you have a problem with that I can only suggest that you take it up with them. Until then, per the manual, the motherboard only offers x8/x8 when two video cards are used per page 2-9 (excluding the nf200 chip as it makes no mention of that).

Maybe this will help the bandwidth argument.

Thank you, good article. Sandy Bridge has proven to be the best platform for multigpu setups from both sides.

As for the NF200, it's not going to "favor" nvidia over ati. It's a simple duplexor. It may not actually increase bandwidth to the CPU, but it provides additional bandwidth between cards. So yea, not a waste of time.

I wonder if the two bandwith expanders are working well together.
The way I see it, it goes like this:
CPU -> NF200 -> HD 6990 -> expander of some sort -> GPUs

The expander in the HD 6990 might add enough latency for performance to suffer?

How did you determine that the results from 2-3 separate cards each using it's own pcie slot were comparable to 3 gpus only using 2 pcie slots?
I'm done with this stupidity, they aren't going to do a fair test, and to be honest, I don't know that a fair test can be done.

The only thing I know for sure is that price differences of $500 dollars should equal way greater performance. If someone showed me a card that performed similar to my lowly 6850 and gave me $320 to use it, it wouldn't be a question for me.

Methinks another review with 3x 6970's vx 3x 580's will be rather interesting.
Some might say the 6990 in one PCi-e slot is gonna be an issue. ( and thus, a 590 as well.)

Can we have either 3 separate cards vs. 3 separate cards or 2x+1 vs 2x+1??
That would quiet a number of people and answer a number of questions. That said, the Nvidia set up albeit ~50% more expensive shows that it was designed for VERY high-end configs.

Man... so many people love great conspiracies. I doubt Nvidia is still dumb enough to purposely cripple AMD performance. I am fairly certain that future research on AMD or tech analysts end will show that if anything, either Nvidia added additional optimizations in the chipset or GPU driver (if they developed the chipset, that is entirely within their rights) and AMD has to utilize those optimizations themselves or make their own OR there is a software related issue where utilization beyond a certain preset CPU limit fails.
