laptop went crazy!

Thread Starter
My buddies laptop went crazy the other night and now I need to fix it.

From what I see,

1) his desktop (all files) are gone
2) in the users folder the only user is "public" even though you have to sign into his account.
3) he has a few error messages about hard disk errors pop up, not sure if legit or not but another program starts running when windows starts and tells you it is fixing all the errors. Looks kinda like a virus to me.
4) he has a restore point as of 4 days ago
5) he really only needs one folder off the laptop, which has all his school stuff in it, but I can not find it anywhere. It was on the desktop when it got erased.

Thoughts on where I should start?

First of all you should remove the malware. When I have to do this I hook the affected HDD thru an USB dongle to a rig on which I boot from a Linux Live CD. There are many Linux CDs or online tools that can scan and clean a HDD.

After you properly clean the HDD you should attempt to recover whatever files are recoverable and then, depending on how bad was the infection you can either try to boot from the cleaned HDD, or if it was too bad you should Format/reinstall Win.

BTW, how did he manage to get that? No AV or just bad luck?

He had no AV, but from what he said he was looking at a lot of the osama stuff and that is where he think he picked something up.

Also, got a new error message when I started the laptop this morning ...
