Best (modable) HSPA+ phone ?

Like the title says, best phone that will work on a HSPA+ network. (HSPA+ / HSPDA / 850 / 1900, whatever you want to call it.

Basically, I can get a new iPhone (16 or 32) on a plan and noticed that they are selling for lots on fleabay, so price is not really an issue, I just want something that will let me root and/or mod later on when I get to doing that sort of thing.

I see there are unlocked Samsung Galaxy S II is for sale now and it would be nice to have a new dual core phone. Being a new phone, there is not much mod support right now, but I will be getting into that later on anyway.

Anything I should know before making a choice ? Heard that manufactures are working harder to lock down the newer phones these days. Kinda new to smartphones but have noticed that HTC's seem to have good mod support.

Edit: Do carriers make people activate the phone they get on a plan, or will they activate another one that you bring in if it is unlocked and ready for the sim card ?

The Moto Atrix is regularly rooted with ease, nowadays. The HSPA+ update came out.... yesterday.

But if you can actually get your hands on a GS2, then I would swipe that no question.

I think the Atrix has a locked bootloader, so it is rooted so you can do some custimization options but you are still stuck with their OS and motoblur for the most part.

I would wait for the Samsung Galaxy S II if you can, it is coming to all US carriers soon, and with an unlocked bootloader so you can pop your own software on there, even though samsung's UI is pretty good as is.

Here is a review, the release date for US carriers hasn't been announced yet, so if you can't wait then you can pull the trigger on something else.

EDIT: Saw your from Canada, Samsung VP said that the phone will be there Q3, before the US probably.

The bootloader is still locked with the atrix so there won't be any overclocking/custom kernels for a while. Also I've had two of em, the screen on them sucks in my opinion. I would wait for the S2 if you want a nice phone that will have a decent amount of developers working on it (on xda-developers). If you absolutely need a phone now, the inspire is a nice choice for AT&T, for t-mobile the G2X, for verizon the thunderbolt is ok but not great (incredible 2 isn't bad), and for sprint theres the EVO 3D which is coming soon.

Thanks for the quick replies.

The GS2 is selling (claimed already unlocked) from the UK right now at some online stores and on some on fleabay.

My network is the new MTS/Rogers HSPA+ netowrk.

Also heard the GS2 from the UK is a slim version that does not have near field communication. Do we need/use that for anything usefull/important ?

NFC really isn't used much right now in the US (I don't know about Canada) (hell the only place I know that uses it here is Starbucks) so I don't think you need it. Maybe in a few years it might become more prevalent but for now its almost useless.

Thanks. Not sure if you noticed the edit in the OP about activation. Kind of wondering about that as it may give the iPhone more value if it is not used/activated (besides the unlocking before selling)

If you already have a new phone that is unlocked you can just take the sim out of your old phone and and drop it into your new one and there you go. Easy as pie, done it several times.
