I never had a seagate HD die on me, but I have Western digital HD die a couple of times in like 2-3 years. I glady take that seagate hard drive. since the one I have now is working great.

There isn't much choice since there are only three HDD companies left.

These are numbers for parts sold between april 1st 2010 and october 1st 2010, and returned before april 2011. so after a 6 month to a year use.
They are based on the return rates of a large french online retailer.
- Western 1,5% (contre 1,4%)
- Samsung 1,8% (contre 2,5%)
- Seagate 2,0% (contre 2,1%)
- Hitachi 3,1% (contre 3,4%)

Every Seagate drive over 500gb i've ever owned has died, and every single replacement for those drives also died. Of course they change the warranty from 3 years to 30 days after they replace them.....

I've lost hundreds and hundreds of $$$ in failing Seagate drives. I wouldn't touch them with a 10 foot pole.

Hmm with that being said with those numbers.

Let's see, Seagate now owns Samsung HDD division, while Western Digital is trying to buy Hitachi. Lets just combine those failure rates.

New Seagate (SG+SAM) = 3.8%
New WD (WD+HI) = 4.6%

Either way that is still a relatively low failure rate.
