Let's see, Seagate now owns Samsung HDD division, while Western Digital is trying to buy Hitachi. Lets just combine those failure rates.

New Seagate (SG+SAM) = 3.8%
New WD (WD+HI) = 4.6%

Either way that is still a relatively low failure rate.
Those numbers are from last year.... the production merger between the companies has not even started yet.

Don't you actually need the weighted average?

5/100 = 10%
50/1000 = 5%
Average = 7.5%
Weighted average = 5%

I myself don't feel comfortable using Seagate, I use Western Digital myself with no problems yet (still have some good IDE drives lol).
I think I'm not comfortable with Seagate because they bought Maxtor, which i have had a couple drives die on me, so i think that's why it gives me a bad vibe lol.

Why can't you use a 2.5" HDD in a desktop?

Regardless, the number would be even lower. My point that I was trying to make is that <4% failure rate is still really good IMO.

My first HDD to ever fail after less than 12 months was the Seagate 7200.11 drive (before it was pretty well known that the drive had a flaw.)

I swore I never would buy them again, low and behold I have just had 2x RMAs of Western Digitals, first was a DoA 750 GB Black Caviar, then no less than 4x Green Caviar 2TB drives failed (2 of which were RMA replacements for the previous 2.) I was stuck without drives so I got some cheap Seagates locally, and they have been running like a champ (7200.12s in Raid0).

I seriously was disappointed by WD. Looks like I better get the Sammies before they are all Seagate guts, but so far WD track record is way worse in my book now than Seagate.

These large drives have massive failure rates if you go by NewEgg's reviews. Even if you filter out the "verified owner" results tons of DoA/Drive failures reported. Taken with a grain of a salt, I haven't seen so much negativity on a WD product before.

I own 2 samsung drives, and had 2 seagate drives before them. Logically as a satisfied customer, my next disc based storage will likely be from Seagate.
