[The Reg] Seagate has bust the terabyte platter barrier - Page 6

OT:

This will be great for those of us wanting large media servers in the future when you can get a couple 5tb drives for raid 5 and have a whole slew of things on these drives.

I definitely will need more space because my 5x1.5tb raid 5 array is starting to run low on drive space. It will be nice to have 3-5tb drives to replace them with.

To be honest I've had more Western Digital troubles than Seagate, but hard drive problems are so rare that I don't even count them.

I am still leary to buy this...that is alot of stuff crammed on one platter. I think that why drives don't last as long as they used to...I have a 2GB hard drive that still works. No way do I expect any hard drives I have right now to be working in 15 years.

Nowdays I'll still take a RAID of smaller drives over a few large ones. I have multiple cases designed to hold eight hard drives and I personally don't need that many TB of space. So I just fill it up with cheap 500GB drives that have been proven to work well for a decent amount of time. By the time I need this much storage the 1TB drives will have gone through a few revisions and be more dependable.

I have had the same 160gb Seagate for going on 5 years. All the drives I have put in family and business systems I have developed have been Seagate.

They, in the past, were usually quieter than WD and I always thought Maxtor was crap.

Seagate has boned some of their drives recently, but on the whole they have developed some very nice drives.

So does any company outside of Seagate change the warranty on your drive to 30 days after they replace it?

The last time I bought a Seagate drive my lawn gnomes came to life and began murdering Vietnamese children. They were buried in my back yard. I swapped em out for some WD drives immediately. Two weeks later I got a promotion and met my future wife.

Why all the hate on Seagate? I haven't had any problems whatsoever for a couple years now.

im guessing all the seagate hate is created from people who have experienced failures from the 7200.11 drives from seagate... that thing failed hard!!! i bought 2 drives, one failed after 6 months, ruining my raid 0, the other died within 9 months still, they said it was a firmware problem...only problem is, both drives are no longer detected in the BIOS even if only i could change the firmware, i believe the drives should start working again...

Don't know if it's just my luck, but all the past Seagate drives I have owned (both desktop and laptop drives) have started failing on me (bad sectors, etc), as a result, I'm not a fan of their HDDs.
Regardless, advancements in storage tech is always good

Wonder if WD will honor the Hitachi warranties over time. Just bought 10 of the 5k3000 2TB's w/ 5 year warranty.

I'm an unfanboy for Seagate. I love everybody else except them.

Seagate isn't as bad as it used to be. Hitachi (what's left of them) isn't as good as it used to be. I generally feel more comfortable buying a WD but that's not going to stop me from getting a Seagate for my dock.
