Can't Run 3dMark 11

Thread Starter
I can't seem to run 3D Mark11 ever since I installed my 2x GTX 590s.

As soon as the first benchmark finishes loading, my computer would restart itself.

Any idea why?

You may need to load balance the 1000HX. There may be too much power drawn from one rail, causing your PC to restart.

A 1000HX should be enough for 2 590s.

I'z just about to jump on and say the same thing, but youra the wise has beaten me to it.

Whenever a PC is just flat-out shutting off, the first thing I suspect is that it's related to the PSU, wherein either over-current protection (like what youra is referring to) or short-circuit protection is kicking in.

As you're no doubt aware, the HX1000 is unique in that it's actually 2x500W power supplies in one housing. So, I'm guessing that youra is saying that you're going to want to make sure one of your cards is running on one of your two 500W power supplies, and the other is running on the other.

Yeah it is definitely something with the power supply then.

I was wondering if anyone would be able to help me in terms of plugging in the power connectors to the separate 12v rails. How can I tell which ones are for the different 12v rails?

You can look at the PSU web page.

Also its written on the PSU itself.

(Taken from this review)

Left side is rail 2, right side is rail 1.

Motherboard is on rail 1, and each rail is 500W.

So card 1 is on the two left connectors (next to the hard connected cables), and card 2 is on the two right connectors.

That should help to set up the power.

Also motherboard+CPU+590 on the 500w rail, that is a bit pushing it.

Agreed.. maybe my HX1000 isn't enough to push my system at full load which is why it resets itself when 3d Mark is engaged.

Otherwise it performs fine in any other situation where it is not being pushed 100%.

I am looking into getting a 1200W or maybe even a 1500W PSU from Silverstone. What do you guys think?

The AX1200 is great, and should be enough as long as you don't try to push it to much higher volts, as the power usage will start to rise immensly.

1500w is nice, but you won't need that much power 99% of the time.

I think you probably can get the HX1000 working for this setup, personally.

Is it possible to set it up like this?

Off of Rail 1 (the rail that powers mobo), hook up one 8-pin PCI-Ex to the bottom (non-monitor) card only. Off of Rail 2, hook up the other three eight-pins. Any other accessories, try to balance them between the two rails.

If you don't have 3 8-pins off the 2nd rail available, then do it like this:

Off of Rail 1 (the rail that powers mobo), hook up two 8-pin PCI-Ex cables, one to each to the two cards. Off of Rail 2, hook up the other two eight-pins, one to each of the two cards. Any other accessories, run them off of rail 2.

Why would it matter?

The card takes close to 350w at full load (give or take, from different reviews. Some say idle to load is over 300w difference).
Its not like the card is taking full 150w from one 8 pin, and "just" 125w from the second one.

Its most likely balancing it out, same with just 8 and 6 pins, to not push each set of connection to its limits.
Else, nvidia design is really screwed up, and at least I believe they did not screw that up that bad.

So mixing it around, is not going to gain anything at all.
