Lens and bigger flash - Page 2

sorry got so use to photo lingo....

fast lens = a large aperture (f/2.8 for this instance) so you can get fast shutter speeds so theres less motion blur.

edit... nm been ninja'd

So there really is no downside to having a faster shutter speed lens. compared to if i got 1 that was slower, which of course is cheaper.

The shutter speed is independent of the lens. A "fast" lens = a lens with large maximum aperture.

The two are different though

But to answer your question before, it really depends on the lens itself. While it's nice to have faster lenses, some are just extremely expensive and I cannot justify the cost myself. For example, I've no issues going with the 50mm f/1.4 over the f/1.8, but I've reservations against going with the f/1.2L.

thats a pretty slow lens. it will work for the rebel, but if you shoot inside alot you will either need to slow down your shutterspeed so you may get motion blur or boost your iso which will give you noise.

a faster lens will be larger and heavier then a slower counterpart.

Gentlemen, remember, he WILL be using a Flash (430, 580). He can get away with a 5.6 lens indoors without any issues. Without a flash... er... go for a 50mm 1.8. At the very least without a flash you want a F2.8 aperture and down (F2, F1.8, F1.4, etc) for indoors.
