Boot Drive Upgrade - What Would You Do?

I currently use a 500GB WD Blue to boot and install programs + a WD 2TB Green for storage.

I spoiled myself once upon a time and bought a C300 and hooked it up to SATA 6.0 and was reading over 375MB/s.

Now I find myself wishing I had not sold it, sort of. However, I have never ran a RAID configuration on my own computer and was thinking of picking up an identical drive.

Here is the actual WD Blue Drive I have: http://www.microcenter.com/single_pr...uct_id=0347353

I do notice lag in system performance when I run multiple apps and I know it is my HD. I have never benchmarked a RAID. If I choose to do a RAID, would I be getting around 120MB/s x2? (240MB/s or so)

C300 is coming down in price, but what I do not like about the 64GB version I had was the lack of space. I found myself fairly straped even with restore turned off etc. I really cannot step up to a 128GB right now.

So, what would you do? I can afford about $120 right now. I do not want to scrap my Blue for a Black or F3. I think I would be better doing RAID with 2 Blue drives. (Which is under budget, hmm, maybe even 3?)

Another question. If I image my drive and save it to my storage drive, is there a way to take that image and install it onto my RAID? I have a 2nd PC I could use to make this easier, but can I RAID 2 slave drives in it and then install my image?

60GB Vertex 2. (make sure it's not a 25nm revision...no E in the description. I've heard that the extended drives (e) do not perform to spec)

If I was hooking it up to SATA 3.0, I know the Vertex 2 is slightly better than the C300, but I would be hooking the C300 up to SATA 6.0 and it benchmarks about 100MB/s faster than Vertex 2 on SATA 3.0.

Am I missing something?

The whole RAID idea is getting stale the more I think about it. Grrrrr, SSD = Format... AGAIN! God I am so sick of starting over. Work FT, College FT, Kids FT, CPU Biz P/T.....

EDIT: Microcenter has one with the E. Is this 25nm version faster I take it? http://www.microcenter.com/single_pr...uct_id=0339459

I have 60GB Vertex 2 as a boot drive...I think it was a waste of money really. I boot up fast, but all my software is on a old fashioned RAID 0. I can easily start my machine and go get a soda. I am at my machine when I have to wait for software to load.

I think I will try to get another Vertex 2 one of these days and try a RAID0 of SSDs to get enough space to install some things.

RAID helps sequential performance.... OS needs better random performance.

You would need dozens of HDDs short-stroked to even come close to a poor performing SSD in random performance.

Why is all your software on the array?

Duckie, do you have a bench of your 3xRAID0? What drives are in it?

Here is my thinking. Maybe I go with 3xRAID0 for now and add a good 128mb+ SSD later.

That keeps me in budget and improves my performance now.
