Need Some Advice

Thread Starter
Hey guys. I have been thinking about doing an upgrade on my computer. All I really need is a new motherboard and processor. My problem, is that I don't have a lot of money. Right now, I would like to get a new motherboard because it is the most important atm. I don't have enough PCI-E slots.

I was wondering, can I get a new AM3 motherboard and drop my AM2+ Phenom 9850 Black into it until I can save up enough money to get the processor? I was just wondering if they are compatible. I was reading that I can drop a AM3 into my AM2+ after a BIOS update. I would love to do that, but I need atleast one more PCI-E slot.

Thanks for any info.

How much money are we talking about?

You can not. AM2+ CPUs --> not compatible with AM3 mobos

There are some AM2/AM2+/AM3 boards available, I have one running in my old rig. But I don't see a point to 'upgrading' to those outdated chipsets/boards, plus I don't think they really even make those anymore, so it might be tough to find, don't quote me on that point since I haven't fact checked that statement.

Your best bet to upgrade is wait a month for AMD's Bulldozer CPUs to come out. At that point just upgrade to the newer mobo/chip or I'm sure the prices will drop on the Phenom II x4 955 BE and you can purchase that. May or may not see a drop in SB prices, since they will probably directly compete for performance and be around the same price range.

EDIT: Found some AM2/AM2+/AM3 boards on newegg so they are still making them and they are readily available. Still a pointless upgrade though, wait for BD.

EDIT2: Looks like you are running DDR2, which is not compatible with most modern mobos including the AM3+ for BD or AM3 for the 955, either way you will have to upgrade that as well. I mean at this point you might as well upgrade your whole computer since the 250 is aged too.

Money constraints sound like a definite issue though. Ram is fairly cheap though, so you could do an AM3, 955, DDR3 upgrade next month after BD comes out. I'm not sure on this but you might get some great prices since companies will look to liquidate their outdated stock once BD becomes the standard.
