4 ghz Athlon x3 440? ( Unlocked 4th core )

Alright, I have overclocked my CPUs for years, I know enough to get a descent overclock, and can generally get what I want out of my CPU, but I have really been quite bugged that I can't get my unlocked Athlon x3 440 to 4ghz, and I have probably more than a few things wrong on the way, but let's just see if we can't fix that and get my CPU to 4ghz.

Right Now I am stuck at 3.63 ghz, and it's pissing me off, I'm at 1.544 volts ( probably way to high for this clock speed ) and it's stable, but I can't get it any higher, or it will just crash as soon as I run Prime95. Or much of anything really.

My temperature are quite stable, about 40C idle, and somewhere in the 50-60 range running 100% ( Depends if my computer is upstairs, or downstairs ) If your wondering, I'm running a Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus on my CPU, and as for not getting the actual core temperature, it's broken, or at least the application ( CPUID Hw monitor ) wont read it when the 4th core is unlocked, but the TMPIN0 is the same reading as the motherboard's HW monitor, so I use that.

You can more than likely get most of my settings from CPU-Z, but I will at least tell you guys that my motherboard is a MSI 890GXM-G65 and it's getting a bulldozer CPU whenever that comes out, so I'm not all to worried about my CPU, and why not push it as hard as I can if I'm upgrading anyways?

Yeah I bought my motherboard a while back, but I will be updating my BIOS soon for bulldozer, read more about it here if you don't know what I am talking about: http://www.msi.com/product/mb/890GXM-G65.html

I know of very few Athlon II's that hit 4.0 stable, you will need a lot of luck, and voltage. Plan on going Water cooling?

Not that much stable. Not "going to hit 4.0" stable.

This ^^

Plus what are your other settings? CPU-NB frequency and voltage? NB voltage? SB volts? Ram settings and voltage?

Alright, here are a few of the other things I wrote down from the bios:

North Bridge Ratio x10
FSB/DRAM 1:2.66
HT Link speed x8
NB Voltage 1.33
SB Voltage Stock

As for water cooling, I don't think I'm going to end up with that 'till early june if not july. I'm Still tweaking with it, is just not stable at anything higher than 3.63 right now. Do you think that I should back off the multiplier and bring the front bus up higher?

I know when I got mine to 3.4 stable it took 1.544 volts, and after that it straight to 3.63 without any other tweaks.. ( Other than the front bus, and backing off the ram, as it wont run past 1800mhz, even though the ram itself is rated for 2000, I've heard that a bios update might fix this, but I also heard that the gain in high frequency ram is small )

Not that much stable. Not "going to hit 4.0" stable.

I pulled my cooler off, dusted it out and put a smaller amount of thermal paste on than usual, and it's working a whole lot cooler, and now it's at 32 idle, and 40 ish at 100%, but after looking up some stuff, I found out that I have C2 Stepping on my core, and am I right to assume that it's impossible to get to 4 even on liquid with this stepping or am I wrong?

I have a Athlon x3 450 at 4.032 right now but its running as a triple core..I know when you unlock your fourth core you have to right off the bat increase your voltage to make it run stable under load...so that unlocked core plus overclocking...your gonna need to push some serious voltage increases into your CPU....im stable at 4.032 with 1.55v so I can only imagine if I had it unlocked what my voltages would need to be. Pretty much my friend, no water cooling...no 4.0 unlocked Athlon frown.gif

haha if we were all that lucky! My 4th core would crash immediately after starting prime at stock voltage.

Yeah my core was stock when I unlocked my 4th core, and ran for 3 days on p95 ( I went to a friends house for a couple of days, and left my computer running smile.gif Yeah I boosted it to 1.55, and it's running 3.63, It does hold 3.9 as a tri core though.

EDIT:

I was reading up on a couple of phenom II guides, and I read about a 55C wall, and umm, I'm hitting it, and I noticed, that whenever I leave my windows closed, and as my computer is under my desk, the whole area under my desk will hit 110F ( air temp ), fire up a game and It will blue screen, it only happens about once a month, but now at least I know why.

I can't wait 'till late june though, Bulldozer, another 6970, and an extra 4gb of ram wink.gif And I'm getting an NZXT Whisper tomorrow, as my 6970 at 950mhz makes it really loud if I want it to stay cool...

I wonder what kind of clock speeds we'll get on bulldozer? Will we be pushing 4ghz easily like the i7 guys?
