I used to be able to get higher OC's at lower vCore, voltages, why?

When I first got my i5 2500k I was able to hit 5 ghz on 1.42 vCore about. I was also able to achieve 4.8 ghz at much lesser voltages to, 1.35 vCore. Currently, 4.8 ghz requires 1.395 vCore, and at 5 ghz, I have gone as high as 1.495 to hit it, but it's unstable.

I had all the other voltages, bios, and whatnot, the same. I switched to the b3 board recently and am faced with the exact same problem as my b2. However I'm using F3g jz bios now.

Anyways, why is this the case? Could it be the power supply? Could the b2 board have fried my chip? I never did any suicide runs and always kept temps below 75.

Thanks for your guys help, need to get best OC for the Chimp Challenge possible!

Same thing happened with my CPU recently...It's happened with other CPUs of mine too. I think it might just be due to "wear and tear", but in the form of electron migration and such.

Component aging is usually the biggest reason. New boards need to be broken in, they'll settle in a bit and then you can establish a longer-term stable overclock. Same for processors (to a lesser extent), and especially for GPU overclocking.

Also, large changes in ambient temps can cause the same thing.

it's likely degrading.. slowly but surely

how long have yuo had it/folded on it?

Welcome to CPU degradation, the main reason I keep my voltage below 1.3v...

Sounds like degradation, for which most can usually get a warranty replacement. Over time, your CPU is requiring more voltage to perform at the same clock. If your CPU is suffering more degradation than it should, definitely should be covered by warranty.

I wouldn't put this down to electronic 'wear and tear' - this usually happens over longer periods (unless the cpu has been run at an out-of-spec voltage or high temperature).

Either your cpu has undergone some form of change/suffered premature 'aging' or a certain setting somwhere has been changed.

I've had it since the end of February. , my poor processor, It's not even 3 months old. How would I contact warranty about it? And would I take it back to frys or deal with intel?

When I would fold I'd fold at the 4.8ghz spec, at the low vcore. I have water cooling on just the cpu, temps would hit 65 max at load on 4.8 ghz.
