Router doesn't want to connect through modem...

Thread Starter
I just got cable, internet, etc hooked up at a new house and I'm trying to get the network up and running. However, whenever I go from the modem to the internet port on the router and then hook up things to the other 4 ports. The lights indicate there's a connection and all that, but neither wifi nor wired connections can get on the internet. However, I can browse the network just fine, just no connectivity.

You may need to call your cable company to get them to recognize the MAC address of the router... some companies have this problem.... I have had it with charter a few times in the past

Can you get into the router config and see if it is pulling an IP from the modem?

I can get into the config page of the router. I'll go do that then if it doesn't work hook back into the modem to report back.

Normaly you can see it the router you public IP.
If you don`t have any they got maybe a DHCP problem.
It also could be that they have a DNS-Server problem.
I would call them and ask.
But before check if you got a public IP on your router.
Some friend of our familie had that problem and asked me for help. Can explain it here to long story.
But only a small thing: They guys from the ISP said that the config of the Router had been changed because of antivirus software update. LOL?
Edit: Even without DNS you should be able to ping google. (try 74.125.39.106)
if you have a public IP...

I bet its the cable company not recognizing the router's MAC address since he used to be straight into the computer. I have had that exact problem before many times... albeit 6 years ago... but hell, worth a shot

I just reconnected back to the router and went through that to get into the config and it's not pulling an IP from the modem. It's all 0.00.00.0. It's currently set to Automatic - DHCP.

One thing you can do is set the router to clone the MAC of your computer that you connected directly to the modem. Just make sure all other computers are disconnected. If it cannot auto clone for you, lookup your PCs MAC address and manually enter in the router. Then save changes and power cycle the router

Try OpenDNS for your DNS:

208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

Just to test that. That can hinder your DHCP from grabbing an IP from your provider.

Failing that, switch off the modem for 30 minutes and see if that does anything. After that, contact your provider.

Well, that worked. I just wonder if it's the best solution to the problem. Anyways, thanks for the replies everyone.
