I'm actually selling my acer timeline x
mine is the i3 with a 5650 (basically same GPU, just re-branded and the vcore is increased a little).

I have both Crysis and Metro 2033.

Metro is around 55 on lowest settings, but if you don't mind 30/40 fps you can play it on med. I have a massive mix of settings for Crysis ranging from low to high and I got 60 fps avg. Both games perfectly playable on my machine and you'd actually save a little $$$.

There's an inspiron 15r that has a pretty good mid range cpu and gpu for around $700

edit: Saw this deal, pretty good for a core i5-2410m and discrete gpu http://dealnews.com/Dell-XPS-15-Core...ng/459034.html

Why not this Acer?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16834115987

a 540m seems to rank ok a bit better than the 6550m. Battery life isn't very good though even with Optimus according to one review.

do you think it's really that much better then Acer Aspire AS5552G-7464 AMD Phenom II X4 N970 6GB 500GB 15.6IN Radeon 6650 ? especially with the price difference.

Checking back in the other response, I now believe that XPS machine deal is killer. Sure it's $674 but it would be superior overall to the Acers and look nicer. It's newest Intel (turbo to 2.9), has a 525m, just a bit worse rank than the 6550m. But it looks awfully nice too. And looking at the gpu charts, the rankings are a bit weird, all of these gpus are very close on 3d Mark Vantage at about 3000. My concern with the Phenom is I'm not familiar with their power consumption or turbo modes or even how they rank clocks against intel. I'd rather have an effectively faster dual core turbo (with hyperthreading) than a slower quad. So the $ between either Acer and this XPS is definitely worth it imho.

but the first acer (6650) video card is better and it's less. the phenom II isn't a horrid cpu either, and the i3 isn't bad either and has a good gpu too, I can't see why to get the dell..
I think the Phenom is an inferior cpu, it's locked at 2.2, it benches worse then half the last gen i5's (dual-cores) on tests that quads should excel at. It also has 2.6 hours of battery. So your trading clock speed for 2 extra slow cores that may not affect your gaming and I think clock speeds will matter at 1368 x 760 resolution. I don't see the performance on the gpus mentioned to be that different. If you check the Vantage scores they'r all 200 pts apart at most. I don't think that's a huge difference but these mid-range machines don't get much love on the benches so real life tests are hard to find.
