Need Help Choosing New Motherboad

Please Help......

Hi I am looking at building a new computer for the 1st time also. I am considering two different choices for the motherboard. Could anyone please help me by giving me their opinion of which one is better or preferred. I will be using a 3.2ghz 6 core amd Phenom II possessor. Any help would be greatly appreciated... The two choices I am considering are:

ASUS M4A87TD/USB3 AM3 AMD 870 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 AMD Motherboard
or
MSI 880G-E45 AM3 AMD 880G HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard

What do you guys think? I am getting a little confused choosing between the options. They both have different slots and different on-board graphics chipset / hdmi connections etc. I think (I am new at this) The ASUS has a pci express x 4 port and the msi does not, however the msi has an dvi and hdmi, and better audio included onboard with the motherboard.

Please let me know any and all of your thoughts on this.... This is my last decision before I buy the parts....

Thanks in advance.....
Chad

6-core Phenom II on that MSI motherboard = suicide
On the ASUS motherboard either is not too ideal if you plan to overclock/use an aftermarket cooler

do you plan on overclocking at all?

Thanks for the help and assistance...

I do not think I will be overclocking the cpu much with this machine. If I need to consider a better motherboard please make some suggestions. Here is what I saw between the two I was looking at.

choice #1

ASUS M4A87TD/USB3 AM3 AMD 870 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 AMD Motherboard

Pros:
Has a PCI express x 4 slot
Has usb2.0 and usb 3.0 onboard

Cons:
no hdmi
do dvi
fewer exterior ports

choice #2 MSI 880G-E45 AM3 AMD 880G HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard

Pros:
Has HDMI port
has 6 audio ports
eSATA port
has vga and dvi connections
has IEEE port

Cons:
has not pci express x 4
has no usb 3.0

Are there other differences I am missing? I will be using this machine for mostly heavy applications like video editing and less gaming so I think overclocking wont be a big issue. I can upgrade the cpu fan to something more than the heat sink standard 4 heat pipes. Will this help ?

Thanks

Chad

No such thing at all. That is how you learn to do with things people say you can't. Unless its greyed out and nobody can fix it...run it till it won't reboot. Your first choice is usually the best choice.
Trust me...I do it all the time, and eventually I figure out a way to overcome the obstacle. This is an overclocking forum...no equipments are considered unuseful.

How about going with an AM3+ motherboard so you can upgrade to Bulldozer later on if they turn out to be monster CPU's? These will still be compatible with your choice of AM3 CPU.

AM3+ Motherboards

I would go with the AsRock because of it's 16x/16x/4x PCI-e Configuration allowing crossfire and a physX card if need be..

Yes please choose wisely on a mother board, beside needing a good one to get stability even with a moderate oc, sooner or later you will prob want to upgrade your cpu.the 2 your showing are realy not that great, my choice has always been asus for years, but a better one than what you have chosen.

Listen to XD 1771!

I am certain for you price range there is a better choice. Hold off just a few and let some of the other guys chime in with some suggestions. If you are going to be doing video editing, OC'ing would be a huge help as most of the video editing software is processor dependent. I would also consider getting 8gb gskill Ripjaws at 1600 or 16gb gskill Ripjaws at 1600 to help keep things moving.

If you have not started making purchases yet, an i5 2500k or i7 2600k build might net you a little more processing power for video editing since it has the HT virtual cores. I use an i7 for cad rendering and it allows eight workers compared to the my AMD's 4.

Run it till it won't reboot.
Reach point where it won't reboot.
Deal with a painful RMA, chance that other parts are fried, deal with 2 weeks-1 month or more of no compy.

Your choice
I have never had to deal with this and never intend to.

Do you intend on using onboard graphics or a discrete card? One board you selected does not have onboard graphics and the other does. They are not really comparable in that respect, and it is best to get a board suited to your needs. If you plan on gaming at all, a discrete board is recommended.
