Firefox using double the memory of Chrome

Thread Starter
Ok so another thread peaked my intrest to look at this and I was quite supprised at the difference in memory usage. As I am on a laptop with 2gb of memory my memory is at a premium.

Has anyone else experienced this or has anyone checked or know a reasion why it is like this?

total usage for Chrome is 86,800k vs the almost 164k of FF

Opened the same amount of tabs you have open (and same websites)...Firefox only uses around 70mb. And that's with 12gb of RAM installed.

Try reinstalling software?

You aren't using FF4...

this install is only a few days old I just did a fresh 7 pro install on my laptop after butchering a custom theme setup lol

Are you running anything extra to help with memory useage? Ive never been able to get FF under 100k I managed to get it down to about 105k at one point but thats it

*edit*

I'm not running anything extra. Like the guy above you pointed out I'm on 3 and you're on 4. But I would only imagine that RAM usage would be less on 4

What is the RAM usage when you open blank Firefox with nothing open?

I opened all my favorites and I still wasn't able to get as high as yours

I use 2GB of RAM sometimes...I actually had to install 4 more GB of ram b/c of the memory leakage.

In that case it's really nothing to worry about.

I mean, is it affecting performance? Probably not.

Ok so i opened up 10 tabs in each one chrome and ff. FF is pushing 260k of memory while chrome is only at 146k wth that is a rediclous difference in memory usage!

Firefox 4.0.1 is currently using about 482 MB of my memory right now.

I have 4 tabs open:

I also have five App Tabs:
 • Weather.com
 • InterfaceLift.com
 • Drummerworld.com's message board (logged out right now)
 • IMDb page for a listing of every single episode of Frasier
 • www.morow.com - progressive rock internet radio

I have 23 extensions, the default theme, and all the usual plug-ins.
