I'd spend $100 on an Athlon II or Phenom II and a free motherboard from Microcenter. then another $30 for some cheap 2gig DDR3 memory. Use the onboard GPU for now.

It's your choice if you want an AGP video card, but this is what I would do. You can always add a nice discrete PCIe video card when you get some extra cash to tie you over until you do a REAL PC overhaul.

The important thing is the switch to PCIe. Once you do, it opens up a ton of great deals on higher performing video cards at probably 1/2 the cost of a AGP video card.

It depends. 256-bit will be twice as fast as 128-bit, two things given, and those are that ALL else is equal, and that is only in theory.

Usually, going down in bus width does seem to make you hesitant, but take the GeForce 7600GT (not the GeForce 7600GS) for example. It's 128-bit and is faster than the GeForce 6800GT, which is 256-bit.

The Radeon 3850 isn't 128-bit anyway, but the Radeon 4650 is. If you go with that, at least get the DDR3/GDDR3 version. Less is simply unacceptable on video cards anymore.

I just sold my x1950 GT on ebay for under $35 shipped. This card replaced a 7600gs and was a big upgrade. If money is really tight you can find a suitable upgrade if you look hard enough.

I'd like to thank everyone who responed to my queries. I went ahead and ordered an HD4650 from newegg, the HIS one with 1GB ddr3 ram onboard. That probably is overkill for a Gallatin P4 3.2, but then again the P4C800e is one of the most overclockable of the 875/478 boards and I do believe this forum is afterall somewhat dedicated to squeezing every last bit of performance out of one's rig, even if it be an outdated one.

I'll upgrade evenually, but when I do it will almost certainly be for an Intel chipset performance board. My son is a network admin for a national corporation and is waiting for the sandybridge to mature. When that happens he'll get that and I'll likely pickup his P58 board for a song.

When I get the 4850 installed and running I'll post back on its impact on performance compared to the 6800GT I'm using now. (The 7600GS is just too slow.)

Thanks,
bob

Well, after much conflagration with finicky ATI hotfix drivers, I got the 4650 running. Initial 3DMark03 game scores showed ~50% increase over 6800GT. I then proceeded to make some adjustments:

swapped out 2GB XMS3200C2 kit for 1GB XMS3700PT setting CPU Ext Frq to 225 to get up to 3.6 GHz, CPU temps low 30's idle, low-mid 50's under load
locked AGP/PCI bus to 66/33
o/c HD 4650 to 645/700

This resulted in 3DMark03 score 20146 (up from 18042 @ default values)

Now the bad:
although memtest86 shows no errors, prime95 gives errors at anything over 218 CPU Ext frq (~3488GHz IIRC)
pcprobe shows 3.3 rail drop fluctuation between 3.12 and 3.18 (don't know if that's an issue since normal reading is only ~3.21), VCore drops from ~1.58 and fluctuates in the 1.4x range. Again, don't know if that means anything. I guess it could be heat related as Northbridge and FET's seem hotter than usual, but that could be my imagination as I can't find my temp probe to take readings. Come to think of it, I haven't seen a lot of my test/repair gear since my days of doing contract repair work at the local DataDoctors. I'll have to investigate that.
