How CCC Botches DX11 Benchmarks

The apology I sent to BallaTheFeared explains it all. Basically any DX11 Benchmark with CCC installed, and Application Managed box is set, is not accurate. Not sure if this also applies somewhat to Nvidia driver settings or not.

Dear BallaTheFeared,

I saw your posts so I did some experimenting. Look at screenshots of CCC to follow what I'm saying. First I'm going to say that yes, I found out with certain CCC settings, it screws with the tessellation somehow, increasing score.

I first noticed my dx11 scorse increased when I went from CCC 10.12 to 11.2. I just figured it was drivers evolving and getting better use out of the hardware so I didn't think anything of it. But, that was also the first time that AMD gave the tessellation control options in CCC. You could either choose AMD Optimized, Use Application Settings, or manual control of 2-64x. AMD Optimized was the setting by default. I noticed my FPS increased when set tessellation to Application Managed when running 3dmark11, Heaven, and the Dragon Age II demo. I didn't realize it was reducing tessellation because I never really played around with tessellation until a couple days ago, after seeing your posts.

It wasn't until I played around with the manual settings and added a ton of tessellation, and saw my FPS drop, that I realized something was really wrong with my bench scores. But that didn't answer why in Application Managed mode, I was still seeing higher scores. So more testing...

I determined that it is the Application Managed that is broken in CCC. It seems that checking the box just leaves your tessellation setting at whatever it was before the box is checked.

I'm going to break this to the community soon, maybe tonight or tomorrow. I figured I owed it to you since, well...you know I like to bust your balls whenever I can. Looks like the pie is in my face now man, but at least we know why. So, for what it's worth, sorry man.

What if a game doesn't have a tessellation setting to tell CCC what to do and it just runs what was last run?

This was fixed in 11.4. However, the ability to run benchmarks with zero tessellation is why 3dmark11 still flags AMD drivers as unsupported.
