Thread Starter
OK so i just bought 2 Zotac GTX 460 768MB DDR5 cards to replace my older 9800 GTs. The probleming im running into is my PCI slot 2 is not working at all with either 460 cards. The fan starts to work then it stops, starts, stops, starts etc.... until it overheats and crashes my computer.

My guess would be that some of the contacts in the 2nd pci-e slot responsible for transfering power to the card are faulty or obstructed. I would take a good look at the pci-e slot, make sure it looks normal and nothing is inside that would block any of the contacts.

Either that or maybe your PSU has an issue.

As you are swapping cards, I am wondering if it could be a driver conflict issue.
Do a complete uninstall/resinstall of all your video card drivers perhaps?
Which board do you have?

If you connect only 1 card, on the second PCIE slot (while keeping the first slot empty), is the card being recognized?

If not, it means that your motherboard is the problem.

First off, I see this is your very first post and so a big WELCOME to OCN!

Check this obvious first:-
Inspect the 4-pin fan plug (pic 1 below) to make sure it is inserted fully and securely into the PCB's header (pic 2 below).
If unsure, use a pair of forceps to take it out and reinsert.

Edit 1:
I just notice that you said it does not work for either card. So, it is highly unlikely that both cards get loose fan connection. So, disregard my above suggestion.

Thnx Guys for the help

BinaryDemon - I Thought that too, so i tested to see if i prolly did some kinda damage to the slot and reinserted my older 9800GT in slot 2. Booted it up and the card powers up with fan on.

DarkPhoenix - I uninstall the drivers before installing my cards, even used that driversweeper program too. One thing i do notice when im done i still have these programs showing on my "Programs and Features" screen. They are "NVIDIA 3D Vision Controller Driver 270.61, NVIDIA 3D Vision Driver 270.61, NVIDIA Graphics Driver 270.61, and NVIDIA PhysX System Software 9.10.0514. I uninstall them anyways but for some reason i cant uninstall NVIDIA 3D Vision Controller Driver 270.61. Also i did notice twice after completely unistalling everything the installer crasher just after its done telling me to restart my computer, not sure if thats a big problem.

Defoler - Its not recognize, i get a prompt before my computer starts up to install a graphics card into PCI slot 1

windfire - Fans work perfectly find in PCI slot 1 and slot 3, just not in slot 2. I even tried connecting both cards in the 2 working slots at the same time and i get a prompt before my computer starts up to install a card into slot 2

You mean if you only have 1 card in the system, in the second PCIE slot, and there is no picture and you get an error to install a graphics card?

This means that your motherboard is the fault.
You have most likely a dead PCIE slot.

It shouldn't be like that. It should allow you to put a GPU in whatever slot you have.

Ya when i only have 1 card connected and that is slot 2 i get that prompt before my computer starts up. The screen is the same screen you see showing DEL for setup and etc when booting up. What i dont get is why my 9800GT works in that slot

Someone suggested prolly my motherboard is not providing enough power to the slot for that card

I don't think its power.
PCIE standards are 75w through the PCIE slot. If your slot doesn't deliver that, its still a bad slot, even if your other cards works on it.

But if you are saying that your 9800GT works on that slot (without a card at slot 1), I'm not sure.

You got a bit of an odd combination.
