What would YOU do with a small $150 budget? - Page 2

It's not always about the specifications of a certain item, it is also about the quality. I asure you Antec power supplies are high quality and will certainly out perform your mexican shop PSU. The PSU is probably one of the top 2 most important parts of your computer. You don't wanna plug that mexican shop PSU in and have it fry everything. Trust me.

EDIT: And if I had $150 I would certainly not try to build a super budget computer with it.

I know it seems kinda shady, but the rails and pcie connectors are set up perfect.

My other option was this:
VisionTek 500W 20A on 2 rails, 2 PCIe connectors, for $29 shipped (Amazon).
http://www.google.com/products/catal...d=0CF0Q8wIwAA#

Also, I want to add that this is not going to be "the system" that I'm going to make uber. After, I'm going to build a 2nd system to make a "real one" later on (a year or so) when I have real money. For now, I need to make this one as best as I can.

Yea, I was thinking of selling the ram and either getting matching ram, or just leaving as is.

I know mexican and computer seems bad, but I'm sure it's going to last at least 3 years or so. I mean, the fact that it had 18A on 2 rails (not bad for 500w), 400+W dedicated to the rails, and 2 PCIe connectors, seems like they knew what they were building. I would like to know how a bad PSU can destroy my comp though. I'm newb, please tell me.

Lastly, haha. I have a budget for food. System upgrades is a luxury and I can possibly go over $200, but I'm really good with budgets so, yea, this $150 is dedicated to my system. What would you do with it? Or is $150 just too small a budget?

Visiontek makes GPU's. I would not trust them at ALL with a power supply. $30 for that unit screams garbage at me.

Oh, and the Antec unit for $20 AR that I'm suggesting...the normal price on it is $54.99 for a 430w unit.

Amps and wattage mean almost NOTHING if the unit cannot put them out within spec and with low ripple. This is why I told you to look into the Antec Basiq 430. It's a solid unit, will ACTUALLY put out 430w continuous, it'll last years and years, and it'll keep ripple down to a bare minimum, and stay within ATX spec the entire time up to a full 430w.

You need to go do some reading honestly. I could have built one REALLY decent budget gaming machine for $150. Especially if I already had an 8800GT.

No, no, and NO.

You don't understand, that power supply is TERRIBLE. 20 amps on the 12 volt rail is about 200 watts.

I think you should get a quality brand PSU, or I'd be worrying every second about my dirt-cheap PSU dying on me and possibly killing everything with it.

The PSU I listed is better because it has a quality OEM inside of it. The CPU would be better since its the Phenom II architecture (much MUCH faster). And DDR3 is going to be a LOT cheaper than DDR2.

If you'd rather blow your money on old hardware, that's cool too though.
Yea, I agree. The thing is I need to start making some recordings on Fraps because I want to try to youtube partner, and I want my video quality to be as best as it can be. It's a difficult thing to be a youtube partner, so I don't want to invest too much, but I want to put some effort in making the videos in good quality. I bought a Blue snowball microphone so that my audio is good.

So, in other words, there isn't much more I can do, right?

I bought the 8800GT for $50, upgraded to dual core ($70), upgraded from 1GB to 2GB ram, upgrading PSU from 300w (one 12A rail) to 500w ($20. even though it's mexican, it should handle my video card, right?), and I even got a free mobo (for a total of $140).

So, keep my $150 and leave my system. I was thinking about getting a 460GTX. I saw a 768mb for $90AR.

If you throw a GTX 460 on a junk PSU, and on a K8 dual core from 2003 / 2004....you're asking for troubles.

If you have $150 cash in hand right now, ready to roll....I could deal shop for you on newegg right now. Probably get you a solid Athlon II x2 / DDR3 / decent PSU setup, with a good board too maybe.
