11.04 upgrade was fatal

Thread Starter
What's all the hype over ubuntu 11.04, I made a terrible mistake and took a leap of faith with the 11.04 unity upgrade and it limped along for about 10 minutes with only a small fraction of my add ons working, freezing and not responding until fatal crash and could not recover installation at all. I did not like it at all, laggy and terrible feel to it IMO.

This comes just after I was getting use to 10.10, how easy it was to customise, so this may soon be the the end of the road for me in linux because I just don't like the unity changes at all, this really sucks...

It's the Beta version of the 11 series Ubuntu I'm not surprised it's got hiccups, just wait till the final build is released (then migrate), I went from 10.10 to Fedora core 14 just to try out greener pastures, I'd suggest you experience other distros as well

Don't judge the rest of linux just because of one distro. Also you can disable Unity yourself and use Gnome 3.0. Plus all new gadgets and features offered in 11.04 can and will cause issues. Furthermore it is using a new kernel and system for handeling things under the covers so of course your going to have issues. Give it time and fixes/patches/workarounds will be released. The Ubuntu team were trying something new this time around and because of it they probably missed quite a few bugs. Ubuntu 9.04 was like this.

I have used Fedora, redhat, OpenSuse, gentoo, Arch, Crunchbang, Mint, Debian, WattOS, Knoppix, Puppy Linux, DSL, and a Backtrack but always come back to Ubuntu. Besides I avoided 11.04 for a reason as I knew it was going to be buggy as hell to begin with. Go back to 10.10 or 10.04 where you were happy and stay there till 11.10 comes out.

Yea I just finished a fresh install of 10.10, that sounds like some good advice...I will try a few different distros on a virtual box tommorrow.
My VM with 10.10 keeps asking me to upgrade every time the update manager is running. I think it must be out of beta if it's asking me that.

Edit: It might be time to use a different distro. You can keep your /home directory intact i believe.

I wouldn't ever use a .04 distro. Of course I would never use Ubuntu so I guess that's irrelevant.

I don't like Unity either, but doesn't mean you should linux altogether. Try out Mint it is similar but I like it better. Or if you want something new give fedora 14 a shot, I'm running that on my server and its pretty good.

11.04 has a lot of problems, just revert back to 10.10 or pick a new distro.

If you want another distro that's easy to use like Ubuntu then try Linux Mint or Fedora.

I installed 11.04 a couple days ago on media/server PC and haven't noticed any issues, but it was a FRESH install.

I'm not saying it's buggy for everyone, but it is for some people.
