"new to me" PC... trying to overclock

Thread Starter
I bought a PC off of someone for cheap to let my GF use as a gaming PC... heres the specs

Super Micro X7DCA-L server board
x2 Xeon X5340 Quad core CPUs @ 2.4GHz
8GB (4x2GB) kingston DDR2-667 ECC RAM
500GB Seagate SATA drive
XFX Radeon HD 5750 1GB GPU
SB x-FI sound card (which will prolly end up in my PC)
CM HAF 932 case

Not too bad for $450... I was wanting to play around with trying to OC the Xeons some, but there are no OCing options in the BIOS. However the clock generator (PLL) is listed in both cpuCOOL and setFSB. But heres my problem, it reads the chip fine, but when i hit set freq. it doesnt change. Am i just SOL on trying to overclock these? or am i missing something?

numbers on the chip are: ICS9LPR501HGLF

I have also not updated the BIOS because i dont have a FDD anymore... ive junked all of them >.>

Its a server motherboard so most likely you wont be able to unless you flash the bios.
Im surprised its got an pcie lol.

One thing worth trying (though i dont think it will make a difference)
On the set freq are you using "+" and "-"
on a 775 board i have you has to use numbers so "225".

Kinna what i expected.... not sure what the updated BIOS fixes or changes, but ill see if i can track down a FDD.

Theres no way to input the numbers in either program... setFSB uses sliders and cpuCOOL, i have to use fine tune mode which is only + and -...

I suppose its not that big of a deal, i think having 8 cores will make up for the lowish clock speed

why would you want to overclock it with that much power any way lol x2 Xeon X5340 Quad core CPUs @ 2.4GHz

all i would do is fill it with ram and get a big pci-e card
plus if you overclock it , it will get hot very quick!

No need for overclocking that ****s a beast already! You have 8 cores that's server grade! maybe just get better ram with out ECC cause that slows ram down a bit i think

basicly, i just wanted to see what it would do... ran prime95 and the hottest core was 69c... tmax on those are 100c... also getting the ram to a higher speed would be nice, because 667 is the fastest supported.
