Solved - Computer Randomly Shutting Down

Thread Starter
Hello all, i'm not sure if this is the right place for this. If not could someone tell me where i should post this instead

just recently my computer has been randomly shutting down as if i held the power button on. just a moment ago it did it but this time tried to boot..failed within 3 seconds then repeated the process about 3 times before dying completely and i had to unplug the PSU for a few moments before plugging it back in.

this only seemed to happen after putting an older HDD i had spare in after my other one crashed and needed to be replaced. (not sure if this has any relevance, but thought i'd just put it in incase)

any help would be greatly appreciated.

Edit - after pulling computer components out left right and center, i decided to reset the CMOS and see what happened. so voila! it turns on and shuts down from windows and does not reboot itself.

A big thank you to all the people on ocn.net for their help!

Could be a number of things.

First question. Does it turn on at all? If it does, how long and what do you see on the screen?

it boots fine and will run fine for up to a few hours even, before it randomly decides to shut down. i don't think it's overheating either because i was monitoring the temps and they were average.

Are you doing anything intensive ?

I'm aware you have a quality PSU but it could cause it .. Sounds like some typical PSU stuff.
Have you tried removing your components (graphics card, PSU) and check if it works properly with some other ones ?

When you say as if they power button was held in, I'm assuming you mean there is no BSOD?

Usually the first step I would advise (if it is a hardware issue) would be to take everything out and put it all back again. However, if it was a loose connection somewhere I'd have my doubts the machine would last for an hour or more without any issues.

Do you happen to have a spare PSU you could try?

If it's possible, I would recommend that. That was, we can narrow it down to some single components. It doesn't sound like software misbehaving when there seems to be no BSoD or anything.
