Upgrade suggestions for a friend's old budget rig - Page 2

chances are the ram he has currently is slow cheap and nasty, best to just buy some new faster ram, check what the mobo can take before you buy though as it may well only work up to 800mhz or something,

GPU depending on your budget you can probably get away with something pretty cheap hd5770's are damn cheap right now (and total overkill) mebe see if you can get hold of a second hand gtx260 or yeah a 9800 portal two on lower res is not going to be very system intensive after all its still running on the old source engine which was always pretty friendly

I could run Portal 1 @ 1280x1024 with max details at like 70 FPS with 3 gigs DDR2, XFX 9400 GT w/1 GB VRAM on a C2D 2.13 GHz stock

I'd look for any GT 240 as a video card, and 3+ gigs RAM. That should be good enough

Also, no sense in getting 4 gigs RAM if you're not changing OS to Win 7 64 bits. 32 bits will not recognize a part of the memory and it'll go to waste.

That CPU should handle the source engine well already (portal 1 and 2's engine), I have a pentium D 830 and only run into problems playing CS:S at 1920x1200 on heavily populated multiplayer servers and that CPU is quite a bit better than this one at running source.

I have 2GB on windows 7 x64 and to be honest, it's enough for what I want to do without hitting the limit (play CS:S).

Any card above a 3850 or 8800 should handle most games at that resolution, I used to have a 3870 in my Q6600 rig and it's a very capable card.

My little brother has a 7800gtx in his PC and he's got portal 2 if you want me to check his framerate, the card might just about handle it but should give you an idea of what to expect from similarly powerful cards. I also have portal 1 on my sig rig if you want to know what fps a pentium D gets in a best-case scenario, it's worse than a 4200+ so you should expect better than whatever I get.
Because a 7100 isn't a gaming card it might show you if that PC is being dragged down by that card (it is).
Be right back, running portal

Edit: Minimum I saw was about 30FPS looking into a portal with one on the opposite wall in a narrow tunnel, all settings except portal render depth are maxed out at 1920x1200, the CPU should be good anyway because they do handily outperform pentium Ds

ATI Radeon HD 5450 1GB card you get those for around 50 bucks
or you go for the more expensive nivda i dont like and i prefer ati but you try
NVIDIA GeForce GT 430 if you want you can get a 1gb card starting at 64 bucks. Now for the ram i think you should get 4gb but you could for 2gb but 4 is generally rock solid if your not really doing anything over the top. You can get a nice set of patriot gaming ddr2 4gb ram for around 60 bucks so that puts around 110 roughly. Pretty good for working on a budget but there is one you have to keep in mind that if you want to stay with 32bit your mostly gonna have to go for 2 or 3gb as 4gb of ram wont show up on a 32bit system so if you dont want to change to 64 bit you should most likely got for 3gb so your in the middle of 2 and 4 and dont have to change from 32bit to 64bit.
No point in getting 3gb of RAM with a 32bit OS. Remeber it can only utilize 4gb total system memory including the GPU. There will be no noticeable difference between 2 and 3.

Also, we dont know if his 4200+ is a 939 or an AM2. So RAM prices could affect his total. Regardless which one it is however, a 1gb 4870/4890 can be had cheap enough, and that is the fastest card that his cpu could somewhat handle.

But I agree building a new rig would be the best route albeit it would cost more.

thats true i wasnt thinking about the gpu ram as well but really building a new rig is the way to go. You can totally build a decent for around 600 bucks and thats including a quad core but it all depends on your budget. If you like i can look around for a good custom budget pc cause if you dont get custom or build one you get all the crap and bloatware

As far as the graphics card goes I would for sure get a 9800GT or an 8800GT you can by them new or there are some great deals on here.

Thanks a lot in general for the feedback, whatever we decided to do I know what to look out for, and a general idea of what will help his system the most. Yeah I would build him a new system, but his mum doesn't want him to "waste" all of his saving on it, because what he currently has is enough for homework etc (he is like 14)

I second the 8800GT/9800GT or HD5770/5750. I had an 8800GT before I had a 5770. Both are solid.

8800GT/GTS/9800GT would both be great. I still have the 8800GTS and it does work ..but then again I don't game much. It's a solid $50 card on eBay though.

A Nvidia GeForce 7100 GS (never heard of it, but obv a $30 card)
and is running Windows 7 32bit

At the moment he can't even play Portal 1, I would like to get him up to Portal 2 (he will only be running a res of 1280x1024).

I know that 1gig of ram is way too little for Windows 7, esp running games, but I would like to know the following.

1) Will an extra 2 sticks of 512mb be ok, or should we look at throwing out the current ram and replacing with 4gig?

2) What graphics card would you suggest to replace the 7100GS. Obviously a card that will make sense in this rig, no point sticking a HD6850 in there, right?

Ok, thanks for any suggestions.
add 2gb more ram and a hd5770 & he'll see huge improvement in games,
I also did the same kind of upgrade, trust hd5770 is a great card
