Major PC upgrade (~£500)

Thread Starter
Hey guys, just posting this for some advice on an upcoming upgrade.

I recently took my PC to a LAN (i42) and on the way back have run into endless problems, and now the PC fails to boot into windows. I've tried to diagnose the problems but my hardware was ageing anyway and I may as well just buy new bits!

I'm looking to get a CPU, MoBo, RAM, SSD for windows and a few programs, and a 1TB storage drive for around £500. I use my PC mainly for gaming and browsing, I play competitive TF2 and LoL, and I'm planning on reusing my current HD4870 1GB up until Battlefield3 is released.

Here's what I'm looking at so far:

Intel Core i5 2400 - £142.98
Asus P8P67 Rev3- £122.00
8GB (2x4GB) Corsair XMS3 DDR3 PC3-12800 (1600) - £70.56
120GB Intel 320 Series - £165.00
1TB Samsung HD103SJ Spinpoint F3 - £39.41

Total - £539.95
All from scan.
Feel free to criticise, show me better alternatives or deals

A few additional questions I have:

I currently have a Corsair VX550W PSU, I assume this will be adequate in powering it all?

I'm not a big overclocker, but how will this system cope with a slight overclock?

Partially connected to the above, is it worth getting a 2500k instead. To cost for this I'd probably opt for a smaller SSD, the 80GB Intel 320 perhaps?

To those using a SSD as a boot drive, do you find yourself always wishing you had more space? How many/what programs do you have on yours?

Thanks in advance! :3

I would go sandy bridge. Then you would have a good advantage

Take off 4GB of that memory (you definitely don't need 8GB, half of that will be wasted).

Also, how do you expect to overclock with that locked chip? Get the i5 2500K, not the 2400.

While the 4870 isn't a bad card at all, don't you think it would be more relevant (as a "competitive gamer") to upgrade that card before investing in a SSD? An SSD isn't going to do anything for your gaming performance.

550w PSU should be OK. Sandy Bridge chips are quite power efficient.

You won't be able to overclock the non-'K' Sandy Bridge chips, as they have a locked multiplier and you can't turn up the FSB/BCLK equivalent on Sandy Bridge chipsets the way you could on socket 775/1366/1156 boards.

I'd get the 2500K, and a 64GB SSD, perhaps. Or just not bother with the SSD at all.

I've just stuck a 128GB SSD in my Surround rig (need to update specs) and to be honest in terms of boot speed it's not had the impact I was hoping it would, when compared to the speed boost my laptop got from an SSD upgrade. I'm certainly not running out of room, though; I disable hibernate and move the pagefile off the SSD - that's two big space hogs gone, immediately. Windows/drivers/essential programs using less than 14GB. Not got an Office suite on there yet, but OpenOffice isn't a big install.

Ah, thanks for clarifying. I've not really been following what's been going on in the last couple of years and didn't understand that you couldn't only overclock through upping the multiplier now. I'll go for the 2500K then

The mobo I've selected isn't exactly top of the range but I assume it cope with overclocking fine?

Regarding the GPU, all I'm really after at the moment is a stable 120 FPS in TF2, which as I understand is a largely CPU dependant game. Obviously when Battlefield3 and other games come out I'll be looking to upgrade the GPU to whatever is the best bang for the buck at that time.

Okay, maybe I've overestimated the benefits of SSDs. I think I'll do a bit more research on this.

I'd be tempted to go with that, as I've heard good things about it. I've got personal experience of the P8P67-M Pro, the mATX version, which I quite like, but I've got a 2100T in that board so haven't tried overclocking it as it's a low-power low-noise box.
