What RAID should i try first?

Just wondering my setup right now is 2x seagate 500gb's and a single Western Digital 1TB. all are 7200 rpm. the WD is brand spankin new.

i dont have a huge need for backups, but having space that is "untouched" or that i can swap all my current info over to would be awesome so i can re-install windows.

was hoping to maybe i could do a raid 0 partition using the 2 seagates, and 500gb from the WD, then use the other 500gb as a seperate partition that i could toss my junk onto? is that possible?

i need to reinstall windows, i havent done so in forever, as i lost my key. finally found a program to extract it and i want to re-install before i go to the desert so my wife will be less likely to ruin it lol.

The only type of RAID you could do to include all HDDs would be JBOD, but this can be pointless as you'd multiply risks of data loss while not gaining much speed (or even loosing speed) over 2x RAID0 the Seagate drives. Imho the ideal setup would be to RAID 0 the two 500GB HDDs and keep the 1TB for storage.

how much of a performance increase will the raid 0 give me? is it worth it?
edit:
no information on raid 3 or 4? of corse, i doubt my motherboard supports it, AFAIK it only supports 0,1,5, and 10

RAID0 you will theoretically double the performance, when using 2 drives.

As for the best Setup I would use the Seagates in RAID 0 and then the 1tb drive for a backup drive. Have Nightly imaged based backups stored on the 1tb drive.

That's what I do, I have my 2x750gb drives in RAID 0 and it backs up nightly to my RAID 5 array (5x1.5tb).

OR Another solution you can do is RAID 1 on those 2x500gb drives and then have the 1tb as storage. You want improve performance but it will be redundant at that point.

Raid0, only if you have a real raid controller, not on board fake raid.
Also if one hdd breaks, you lose all data, not worth it imo, I'm using one atm.

Onboard raid performs just fine for a few drives. It's when you use more complex raid arrays and many drives when you really want a raid controller.

Also, whats "fake" about onboard raid? It's still hardware raid and not a software raid.

in my opinion, raid is kinda worthless, but that 70-100 buck in a better processor if your building a completly new pc. If not, keep your money.

Have you ever used raid before, because you certainly don't seem to be familiar with it.

RAID arrays IMO should be used in EVERY pc. Depending on your needs would be the type of RAID used.

But if you think RAID is worthless, I suggest you get familiar with what it does first.
