GTX 460 or HD 6850

Thread Starter
Hey gang,
I'm currently running a single GTX 460 on my SB rig. It's time to upgrade the graphics so I was wondering which would be better. I play Black ops for the most part. Anyway, the choices are to get another GTX 460 or pony up and get a pair of HD 6850's.

I'd like to keep the cost below $400.

Scaling on the 6850s would be MUCH better.

I would just add another gtx460. Going to 2 x 6850 seems like a lot more cost/headache.

Agreed. But if your budget is $400 I would beg that you wait a bit then upgrade to dual 6950s maybe even unlock the shaders the oc it. I believe you would've much happier and is cash well spent then. If you can wait for an upgrade just get a second 460 and save the rest of your cash for a better upgrade down the road.

scaling on 460s is pretty good...dunno what the guy above is talking about...they both scale about the same, but since you already have 1 460, just go and get a second one...much much easier to do and cheaper

I know what I'm talking about. I think you're confused.

AMD 6xxx series scales way better than GTX 4xx series. Simple as that. I am 100% team green, but I still can't dispute that fact.

Personally, I wouldn't spend $400 on either setup. If I have "less than $400" to spend on a GPU, I'd get a 6950 and call it a day. Better yet, I'd save up another ~$50 or so can grab two of them.

i'm going by these...they are both at/near 100% scaling...i had two 560s, and i wasn't a fan of how they scaled specifically in some games so i went with a single gtx 580...

Just get yourself another 460. It's not going to be quite as good as dual 6850's, but the difference isn't huge and the price difference will be.

http://www.hexus.net/content/item.php?item=27167&page=7

Just one example of the differences.

Edit: While I think there is some small margin for error in their numbers, the overall picture is still the same - the difference isn't huge between them.

Exactly. Some games.

That's why random benchmarks for games are so bad for comparing dual-GPU scaling. SLI/CFx profiles can make all of the difference in the world. Some games you'll see 100% and some you'll see barely 20%.
