Windows 7 freezing on startup

Thread Starter
I browsed some other posts but couldn't find anything that helped. I've had no problems recently, then this morning when I turned on my computer W7 froze while loading up (during the animation).

I've tried taking out everything connected to my tower (flash drives, headphones, etc..), even mouse & keyboard, still froze. I am able to boot into safe mode. From there I used CCleaner to clean out the registry; didn't help. I was running an older driver version for my GFX card, and I uninstalled in safe mode and hoped to boot into regular mode to install the new ones, but it still froze (though it seemed the W7 animation went on for longer before ultimately freezing).

I really don't want to reinstall W7, so any help would be appreciated.

I'd start with swapping/testing RAM.

How would you recommend I do that? Testing, that is.

I had this issue a while back, and I never found the cause of it. It sort of went away by itself.

I could boot up my computer and it would freeze at the animation, hit the reset button and it would boot fine.

Try to boot with one RAM stick at a time. If you can boot with one, and not the other, then you know which stick is defective.

You could also run Memtest86+ (free software) to test the RAM. It runs on boot up and not through Windows. You download, burn to cd and boot from CD via Bios.

I took out one stick at a time, and it still froze during startup on each stick. Now what?

Update: I tried booting last known working config, and it got passed the animation screen, but immediately froze on the next black screen.

So I did a fresh install of W7, and it gets through the 'Completing Installation" phase; the next screen is black with a blinking underscore in the top left corner, and it seems to freeze here (numlock won't toggle on keyboard). Any ideas?

Update: I did MEMTEST and my memory is fine.
