Difference between i7 970 and 990x?

i have been wondering is their a difference between the i7 970 and 990x besides the multiplier being locked at 21 on the 970.

i have also heard that the 990x can overclock higher on less voltage, is this true?

besides this is their any difference between the two besides the stock clock.

990x would be binned better (lower VID typically) but that doesn't mean that it necessarily overclocks better. In most cases the 970 and 990x will overclock the same. There is a hefty price to be paid for the unlocked multiplier and status of the "extreme" chip

They should overclock very similarly under air/water, the unlocked multi on the 990x can make memory overclocking easier & there is a good chance they have a better IMC.
The 990x comes out ahead with extreme cooling.

Multiplier can go to 25 on a 970... Hell even my 950 can go to 23. tongue.gif

Also the QPI link is faster on the 990x @ 6.4 GT/s as opposed to 4.8 GT/s on the 970.

i still dont understand what QPI and 6.4GT/s is. can some one explain what it is and if it is worth the $400 extra

My multi goes to 64(over 8.5ghz). Doesn't really matter.. After 50 liquid nitrogen is probably needed. There is most likely a faster sweet spot on the 990x.

As mentioned, for normal cooling methods, you won't see a huge difference in the 990X. It might reach a modestly higher overclock, or perhaps with a little less voltage, but not enough to account for the huge price difference.

The extreme chip will outperform under more radical cooling methods where a 230 BLCK just won't get the chip running fast enough (> 5Ghz).
