Used 6950 2GB, crashes in games and mining

Thread Starter
I just bought a three months old 6950 2GB and what I did I took out my old 5770 and put in the 6950. The card seemed to work fine until I started playing BFBC2. It crashed after about 15 minutes. The card was already unlocked when I got it so I put the bios switch to the other position and used stock bios. Same problem. After that I manually forced the cooler fan to 75% (loud as hell!) and no change. The temps were around 60-75c, cant say for sure. I tried my old 5770 again and it worked just fine so it had to be the card. I reinstalled W7 to eliminate any driver issues abd left the computer to mine and by the time I got to work the computer had crashed. Im going to contact the former owner and if the problems keep on occuring I think I'll just flash the same stock bios to both slots and RMA the card. Any opinions/advices?

It's flashed? He probably destroyed the card by using the overvolts and 6970 ram timings. People need to understand the RAM is different.

It isnt a normal crash it does. It just starts looping the sounds very quickly and picture freezes, no artifacts, no blurred freeze screen. Also the computer locks up, usually when my GPU OC fails I can still come back to desktop and reboot normally. You think I could still RMA it?

Yeah, I would, it only takes like a week or two, and that way you can get that out of the way.

I mean does Sapphires warranty include bios switch using and such or should I flash the same stock bios to both slots if I cant find any other solution but RMA?

Did you uninstall the drivers for the 5770 before putting in the 6950? I know you said you reinstalled Win 7 but wasn't sure which card you used while doing that.

For what it's worth I've ran a single unlocked 6950 and currently am running tri fire 6950's at 900Mhz and I haven't had ANY problems like that. The only one I've had was the black screen glitch, but I've had that on my old 470 GTX as well...soooo.

On topic, RMA the card and you'll love the new one you get. If you need any help with it just be sure to let me know, I'd love to help you!

There is a BC2 crash for 69xx that happens about 15-20min in, related to leaving open MSI-AB or TRIXX or even the latest GPU-Z, something to due with these programs confunsing punkbuster I think, maybe other similar progs too.

I had that crash for awhile in BC2, screen just freezes, looks completely normal, get a harsh tone for a few seconds....then need to reboot

I still use TRIXX for a slight OC/fan control, just X the program before starting BC2, and I use HWmonitor to monitor temps, no conflict with it.
