The packaging of the product itself is not Amazon's duty. The retail packaging is done by Samsung, and the packaging of the retail box in a shipping box is Amazon's job. (Unless you ordered OEM)
Though anyways, I've never had any problems with their packaging. Sure they only use some brown paper but my stuff has never gotten damaged.
I've ordered an HDD from Amazon and to this day it's still running fine.

It was wrapped protectively in bubble wrap.
HDDs can withstand some mechanical force. It's once you start vigorously shaking the life out of them and dropping them on the floor do the real issues start to happen.Edited by kiwiasian - 5/6/11 at 8:58pm
