Modular Power Supply for Phantom Case

post #1 of 10
Thread Starter
Like the heading says I just bought a phantom case and I am looking to buy a modular power supply to help clean up the cables behind the mobo. I have a Corsair TX850w power supply now and it works great but its not modular. My question is should I get the modular version (corsair AX850w) of the power supply I have now or is there a power supply out there that is significantly better? I am also planning on upgrading my graphic cards from 2 x 4890's to 2 x 6950's so would 850w still be enough? That will be happening as soon as I find a good deal on a couple 6950's, (hint to anyone thats thinking about selling theirs...). Also I will sell my old power supply (the Corsair TX850) and I was wondering what that is worth? Im not sure if this is the right but place to ask the last question but I will move/delete it if an appraisal is out of place. Thanks for any help and feel free to pm me about any 6950 deals you have or see.

850w will do pretty well for 6950s. I myslef would go for a 1000w because I like to be super safe and keep my psu's for a while, but 850w is fine . The corsair ax850 is a great power supply because it's completely modular. You could also look at the Antec 850w, and the Seasonic 850w. My tip for you is, though, don't buy a psu from an unkown company. By unknown, I mean, buy from a well known company. If you skimp on the psu, then if your psu fails, the whole computer could come down with it.

1000w would be silly for two 6950's. They could easily run on a good 600-650w.

@ks1 You'll be fine.

850W would be somewhat overkill. But I would, whatsoever, recommend the XFX 850W Black Edition PSU. It's modular, and very decent.

As far as I know, it has a tad better reviews than far most Corsair's at that wattage. It's Silver rated, and fairly cheap considered it's performance.

Bought the ax850 off amazon, along with a 200mm nzxt fan for the side of the case and a 140mm fan for the front. Now I just need to figure out what to do with the H50, anyone have any ideas on a different cooler or a relocation that allows the side fan(and maybe even the top?) to be used? By the way I will be selling my Corsair 850tx any ideas on what its worth?

use two holes up top to hold it up there.
