It's far from dead. It may be getting phased out of the on-the-fly physics calc sort of thing in games, but it's still an extremely powerful tool. For instance, the soon-to-be-released Maya 2012 pretty much replaces all its old dynamics tools and replaces them with Physx. It's said to be infinitely better than previous CPU-computed dynamics systems.

I thought PhysX added very nice features to BC2 when my friend got dual 570s and was able to run PhysX. Explosions look more realistic and and there seem to be more/better particle effects.

Not worth it enough, not to mention most consumers don't realize their AMD cards can't run Physx till it's too late, even though the difference during actual gameplay doesn't drastically change.

You already CAN use these effects on the CPU. I can run Mafia II maxed out with PhysX on my CPU (at a lower resolution since I'm on an GT240 right now as my only card).

But yes, you CAN still use Nvidia PhysX, even with an ATI card, since it can be ran on the CPU.

And the differences in effects is negligible, since it should have been coded on the CPU to begin with.

dude that totally wrong and your friend just made you an idiot.

the frostbite engine in bc2 has its own physx engine.

physx =/= physics

I don't think its dead. I do think that 90% of games we get today are ports and therefore don't utilize it.

Unless Nvidia licenses the technology to AMD, then yes. CPU physics does great things, but it runs on CPUs which aren't anywhere as efficient as current GPUs are. It also requires an extremely powerful CPU to be used without hindering gameplay. That's why games that use Havok and Bullet Physics use very minimal amounts of physics. BC2 physics is pretty basic compared to what PhysX can do.
