OverClocking Unlocked Athlon II X3 440 - Page 3

For the record, HWMonitor and CPUz both report my i5 as being 90w, at 4.8GHz mind you.

Thanks for the help you all.

I'm ok with the my mild OC right now.
I just wanted a budget build that gives a bang for the buck.
I'm more inclined to the lowest power consumption I can get and still be satisfied with the performance.

The only changes I've done:
Ref Clock: 220MHz (up by 20Hz)
CPU Voltage: 1.400 (up by .024v)

I activated AMD Cool N Quiet, and it shows 49.2W with HWMonitor at 880Mhz.
When it was a tri-core, it shows 36.9W at 800MHz.

I will be adding a video card too, maybe HD 5770 and upgrade to LED Monitor in the future.

Still don't know how to post pics, was hoping to post HWMonitor and CPUz so you guys can help me with my OC.

Can you recommend any benchmark software I can use to compare with other system?

Cheers!

Just dropped HT Link Multiplier to x9 to have 1980MHz
I guess I BSOD last drop because I also dropped CPU-NB Multiplier.

something to try just for ****s and giggles. try pushing the max fsb you possibly can while shooting for the max mhz oc you have hit. if you get there and are stable at a decent voltage and temperature try pushing higher from working with the phenom 550 and 555 as well as my old athlon x2 the higher the fsb the less multiplier and sometimes this can also result in less voltage its a toss up. im more experianced with the phenoms but its worth a shot just to see if it works. with my 550 it loved an fsb of 250 as well as 315 and i was able to hit 3.9 with 1.47v and a temperature max of 49c. as i said its a toss up but its something to try if your feeling ballzy

How to add pics:

1) Take a picture by using the "Print Screen" key on your keyboard.
2) Open Paint then press Ctrl+V or right click and go to paste.
3) You can crop your image if needed, then save.
4) Upload the image to a image hosting website like www.photobucket.com
5) After uploaded use the "img" tags provided and copy and paste them here.

Hi Elektrik Blue,

Thanks for the info, but I guess AMD Cool N Quiet will be disabled if I fixed the CPU Multiplier instead of Auto. Then that would mean a steady power consumption which most likely will be higher than when CnQ is enabled.

But maybe I will play with that just to see.

Thanks iinversion!
Your replies are always helpful!

Looks good. Although I think you're using too much vcore. My Athlon quad could do 3.3GHz with 1.20v. Try lowering your voltage and see if it passes.

It also wouldn't hurt anything at all to get your NB clocked up higher (might take more CPU-NB voltage). You'd have to lower your CPU multiplier, and lower your RAM to do it. Just takes some calculations is all. But a higher NB will make things a lot snappier for you.

To be honest I wouldn't proceed at all. Many MSI boards will fail despite VRM cooling. Moreso if they don't. An unlocked Athlon II x3 -> x4 will add TDP and will consume 125W without any overclock. The athlon II x3 is binned somewhat differently, so the Athlon II x3 may very well consume more power, unlocked, as the equivalent Athlon II x4. MSI lower-end AM3 boards fail very often, even at stock speed, on 125W processors of any sort. The only MSI boards that don't fail so often are the DrMOS boards (usually only give at high high voltage & OC) and the new 8+2 designs.

This is my advice, no need to take it, you may end up fine if you keep the voltage values low. But do know what you are risking by doing this and who is responsible in the end (not us).

Don't trust HWMonitor's software readings on wattage, they are not accurate in any way.

I will try what you said bout lowering voltage, but the thing is I doubt that since I unlocked to a quad which may have increased Vcore.
