At stock clocks, maybe. But the 6990 is an OC monster, while the 590 is not.
And probably just drivers and CAP related.

The 6990 is a much better card, since you can extract every bit of performance out of it, while you have to run the 590 like Nvidia wants you to run it.

Put a waterblock on the 6990, OC it like crazy, and leave the 590 in the dust. Put a waterblock on the 590 and... and... nothing. Since Nvidia drivers are limiting you, you can't do anything more with a waterblock on it.

The 590 is quieter but can't clock, the 6990 is a beast, both in clocking and in noise.
Get neither, and go for 6970 in Xfire or GTX580 in SLI.

Sounds like your current temps are fine, I wouldn't worry unless they are getting over 90C. Not to mention those 2 cards you have will perp all over BF3 ect.

You could also get a Scyth Kama Kraze fan for your intake and have it set to change speed based on your top GPU temp.

If you dont get any drivers/game problems with that card.. sure; oh and dont forget, the dual bios crap the 6990 and the problems asociated with them (well documented BTW)

keep your cards and get better airflow in your case.. or hell, change case; if your cards are working fine why you will change them?!?!

1 more thing: if you mainly/motly play those games, go for the better supported/less bugs/runs faster cards, no matter the brand

For example i play a lot ARMA 2, so radeon cards, specially in crossfire its not a good idea (To buggy in this game) Nvidia cards are better in every way for my case: single cards Nvidia have better min FPS than radeon, but lower max FPS; dual cards, nvidia scales very nice, radeons.. its a lotery; too much fooling around to make them work but if you can do it you get much higher MAX fps (great for when youre flying)

Anyway like i say keep your cards, they are still very fast for anything and improve your airflow in the case, or get a better case or water cool or whatever and remember this: any high end GFX card, specially in multi-card combo, NO MATTER THE BRAND ITS GOING TO BE A TOASTY SETUP.. period

post pic of the changes btw

GTX 590 11" length - quiet - BIOS issues not good to OC right now.

AMD 6990 12" length - loud - better on the OC right now.

Both the same price, balls in your court, can't go wrong either way your going to have a great card even stock settings.

Will be buttery smooth game play right now and BC3, next four WoW expansions, Metro 2044, BF4, throw in Crysis 3 with no problem.

Thread Starter
I was deciding that I would just upgrade my case and motherboard, but after further thinking I decided upgrading the GPU's would be a better idea. Selling two graphics cards would be easier to do then a case and mATX motherboard and the graphics cards depreciate in value faster so selling them later one would be a bigger loss than a case/motherboard.

My second decision on selling my HD 5870's is the far inferior tessellation performance compared to the HD 6x00 and GTX 5xx series. This is important because most future DX11 titles, including Battlefield 3, will be extensively using tessellation.

This brings me to another situation for me in performance between the HD 6990 and GTX 590. From what I've seen the two cards seem to be relatively equal on normal/moderate tessellation levels but in extreme tessellation modes the GTX 590 seems to take a bit of a lead.

Then I couldn't decide that for my Eyefinity resolution of 4320x900 (essentially 2560x1600 when bezel compensation is added) if I would need more than the 1.5GB of ram of the GTX 590 and opt for the HD 6990. For me, that is really the only flaw I see with the GTX 590 in my situation. I know people hit the VRam wall with 1.5GB with higher Eyefinity resolutions such as 5760x1080 and up but that basically is over a third (38%) more pixels to process and store than the resolution I play at.

Basically what I've come up with:

GTX 590
+ Cooler
+ Much Quieter
+ Smaller
+ Great/Better Tessellation Performance
~ Equal overall performance with HD 6990
- Only 3GB VRam (1.5GB per card)
- Poor Overclocker
- Higher Power Consumption

HD 6990
+ Great Overclocker
+ 4GB VRam (2GB per card)
+ Lower Power Consumption
~ Equal overall performance with GTX 590
- Much Louder
- Slightly Hotter
- Slightly Bigger

I know most of you probably think that I should just wait to see how each card performs in Battlefield 3 but the problem is I'm in need of a solution now because I can't really game for a longer period of time now due to my cards running hot and possibly damaging them. Man do I wish the GTX 590 had 6GB of ram instead of 3GB and was like $100 more because that would be one beast of a card.

I also added a poll now as well.
I would get neither. Those are amazing cards and you could get a case for the 5th of a price. Even a small GPU-GPU-CPU water loop would be better. I am having a similar issue myself right now (Crossfire 5770's) because my case is too small. But you could easily play WOW and BF3 with a 460. Up to you man.

6990 is much better. Quality VRMS and clocks like mad. The 590 can do neither.
