4 Rads... 14 fans... how many Fan Controllers?

Thread Starter
Heya guys,

I'm new to the water cooling community and I have a question about Rads set up in a Push/Pull system.
I have 4 Rads, 1-RX360, 1-RX240 and 2-RX120's
My intentions are to set up all the Rads in a Push/Pull configuration.
Fans are COOLER MASTER SickleFlow 120 R4-L2R-20AR-R1 120mm
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835103091
I will be cooling a CPU, and 3 EVGA GTX 580 3GB cards.
The water blocks are all EK and I have a Koolance 452x2 Reservoir

My question is, being that I'll have 14 fans pushing air thru 4 different Rads... how many Fan Controllers will I need?
I would like to monitor the heat as well as dial in the fan speed as needed. I've read that the XSPC RX rads don't require a huge amount of high flow air due to the thickness of the rad

I picked up a Lamptron FC5 V2 Fan Controller today http://www.aerocooler.com/shop.cart?..._id=FANLMFC5V2
because I like the fact that I can change the display color to red.
Since each output on the FC5V@ can deliver 30w per channel, could/should I daisy chain the fans from each Rad (4 total) and set it up on the 4 channels of the FC? Each fan needs approx. 4.2w

Any information, suggestions or education in fans and fan controllers would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks much

You only need one fan controller. Each channel can handle 30W and each fan only consumes 4.44W, so put 5 on one channel, 5 on another, and the remaining 4 on a third channel. That'll leave you with a free channel for other fans. In order to do this you'll need fan splitters. I made my own splitters in order to run multiple fans off of a single channel.

You probably want to run fans in push-pull at the same speed, so put the fans opposite each other on the same channel. It'll make your life easier.

You can do 6 fans per channel if you wanted to. They actually have other fan controllers out there that have 8 channels, 30w each so you could setup things however you want

Tink,

I actually just had to go through this same thing while doing my new build (MoRa 3 with 18 AP-15's in Push / Pull). I went with this fan controller because of the review of it that I read here. Also the company I went through to order my splitters and some fan power extension cables were extremely helpful, but I don't have their name at the moment, I'll try to PM you when I get home on that PC. If you are unsure about the splitters/fan power extenders CALL the guys that you are going to order from, I did and those guys were a great help. They told me that if I ordered the wrong quantity (too many mainly) they would allow me to return them at no cost. Lastly, don't cheap out on your fan controller. You certainly don't have to use the one that I linked, but I have read time and time again about people's fan controllers overheating and shorting out/catching on fire just a bit. So it's worth the extra....oh say $40 to keep your rig in good health

I hope that helps you out, if you have any more questions or need help on the install just shoot me a PM!

EDIT ** Lastly if you do go with that fan controller, be sure to get REVISION 2. The link I provided above was to a REV 2 version.

Thanks, this should work out great since I purchased 1 fan controller. I just wasn't sure if I needed to get 2 of the same.

This was my intention. I was going to do 6 fans on the RX360 and hook it up to the 1st channel.
4 fans on the RX240 and hook it up to the 2nd channel.
an lastly 2 fans on each of the RX120's which will be side to side and hook them up as 4 fans on the 3rd channel.

I wanted the digital readout so I went with the Lamptron FC5V2

I'll need to search around for a 'How To' on making up fan splitters and what hardware to get.

The parts numbers you'll need are:
08-50-0114 pins
22-01-3037 housings
22-23-2031 header

To make your splitter you'll connect all 5-6 red wires to one pin, all black wires to another pin, and only one yellow wire to a third pin. I recommend soldering the splitter wires a bit further down the cable from the pin since it'll get kind of crowded. Next you'll solder a set of wires (one red one black) to the corresponding pins on a header. Once that's done you'll have one yellow wire left over. Choose any of the headers and solder it into the correct spot. The header that you solder the yellow wire to will be the fan that reports rpm. Lastly plug the pins into a housing in the correct spots.
