2xGTX 285 OR 1xGTX 460

Thread Starter
I've only use AMD/ATI graphics cards for the longest time. And well, I really don't know too much about nVidia cards.
But my buddy is building a new rig and has 2 options for graphics cards.
Lets say that PSU, motherboard, and the games he plays are not an issue.

He has the choice of two Zotac GTX 285s (sample benchmark review editions) for $150.00 total. (Have been used for benchmarking only.)
OR one MSI GTX 460 1GB Twin Frozr II (brand new still in packaging) for $120.00

Which of these options would be the better choice?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

2 GTX285's are gonna be quite a bit faster than 1 GTX 460. The GTX 460 though has DX11 so if that means anything to you then you should get the 460.

Go for the msi 460, 2 cards will significantly produce more heat and those 285's are also a lot longer and will also require more watts to feed them. smile.gif

Better choice is very subjective. If he wants DX11 then the 460 is the obvious choice. I haven't seen reviews of any new games (in DX10 mode of course) with 285s however that would be a very powerful setup although also power hungry.

By this '' PSU, motherboard, and the games he plays are not an issue'', I suppose DX11 is not an issue as well.

I would choose GTX285 SLI as this pair will provide stronger performance than GTX460. The pair actually performs in the category of GTX480.

LOL it depends.. Over time the 285 will cost a heck of a lot more because of power..

I would go with the dual 285's but thats only because i have no DX11 games and i dont expect to have any any time soon.

DX11 is kinda overrated right now.

Minimal difference.

Only some games support it.

Get the dual 285s.
nope. forget the gtx 285's. much more heat, much more noise, much more power comsumption. not worth it. go with the single gtx 460, and in the future you can pair it up with another gtx 460.

power isnt everything people. heat, power comsump, noise matters also. and future upgradability also matters. i would much rather have 2 gtx 460's in the future, than 2 gtx 285's at the moment. getting the gtx 460 is the smarter choice.
